You can always try to climb some car and wait for them to come closer, then it is almost like shooting a fish in a barrel.
I was a bit dismayed when I FINALLY maxed my harpoons and saw those flaming tips, the haunted are NOT burning up WHAT THE FREAKING HELL?!? I would really like to know why this was taken out, along with matches and corpse burning.
The flame death thing was exclusive to the first game because of Ruvik's fear of fire, the enemies in union aren't influenced by Ruvik and have no such issues with fire beyond the normal "you're on fire" deal. There are a few exceptions to this rule later in the game however.
As for the crawlers? Shotgun all the way, try firing a shock bolt at your feet to no sell their leaping ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and hold em in place for a few seconds so you can pump a clip into their faces. And try to get bullet cascade, it's amazingly cheap for such a useful upgrade and makes dealing with the much more annoying enemies in the later chapters ALOT easier.
