I am So bad at this game
I've seen some of the absolutely insane stuff other players can do and I can honestly say I do not know if I'll ever get to that point. Been trying to play Dante and there are SO MANY BUTTONS to press so often that I Honestly feel like it's playing the keys when I play him.

Some of the stuff he does is super cool though so I do wanna get better at him, but it feels like the fights end too quickly for me to really practice his kit.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get better at this, is bloody palace the best way to practice?

Try practicing combos at thr void

If you're not willing to mod the game, practice combos in the Void, watch/read tutorials and gradually it'll come to you if you put in the time and effort, so long as you take breaks when necessary also.

If you've not modded the game before and you're willing to mod the game to get better, you should try this mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/devilmaycry5/mods/369

It enhances the gameplay and combo potential, implementing mechanics from previous games such as allowing moves to generate Inertia, a significant mechanic in high-level combo play. There're plenty of training options also available via the mod that can allow you to train wherever instead of just being limited to the Void.

Wouldn't suggest bloody palace; you don't get too much in the first 40 floors, and it's too much investment later on for practice.

Are you struggling with DMC5 in *general*, or just with Dante?

In general really, I'm not particularly well practiced at action games of such a fast pace. I played a little of DMC 3 when I was younger, but I never owned a copy so I didn't get to play much of it.

The more I play dmc 5 though the more I come to figure it must be down to simple practice and timing. Things like V's walking stick stabby thing where he bounces from one to another and then the next each time you press the finisher button, or the max exceed when you attack are where I'm having the most trouble.

With Nero the majority of my difficulty comes from remembering the exceed button and to hit it when attacking, Dante is just a bigger version of that issue, there are so many things that I CAN do, that I often forget what I WANT to do.

practice practice practice! just like fighting games, action games and DMC is all about muscle memory and learning combos and optimal routes! No one is a god right away, but if you put the time in you will love the results you see!

Vergil's ironically one of the easier ones to play because of how his kit is less reliant on busywork, and rewards you having your basics down pat, while also having amazing evasion/closing abilities.

As long as Vergil isn't getting hit, and you're landing your attacks, your own performance is enchanced, and you can use his ultimate attacks to clear a room fairly easily.

For example?

Yamato Lifter
Aerial Rave B, stop before you do the final hit that slams the enemy into the ground
Switch to Beowulf
Aerial Lunar Phase
Switch to Mirage Edge
Helm Breaker
Stinger
Overdrive

Is my go to when I just want to isolate one guy, then come down to the ground and give myself some breathing room.

You're not alone. Dante and Nero are a different flavor of MLG Gaming that I cannot comprehend who demand you write a thesis, and have frame perfect reaction speed respectively to get the most out of them.

Play on whatever difficulty you like, it will eventually click. Dante has a lot of options so just focus on learning one thing at a time instead of trying to constantly switch styles and weapons. Dante has a lot of baggage because the gameplay design comes through the entire series - so its no surprise that people just joining now have a lot to learn.

I think the best way to practice Dante is to find your main weapons, start practicing with a few weapons first. In DMC 3, Dante can only hold 2 weapons and bring in one Style. (I started with DMC 3 and just replayed until Mission 10 earlier, and so far using Dante with few weapons is a good refresher for me after not playing for months!) Try mixing combos with 2 weapons first, then if you've mastered it, then add more with a new Style as well. And like anyone else here said, practice practice practice! These pro players have dedicated thousands of hours to it. The learning curve is intense, but just gotta persist. You can do it!! Best of luck! :dmc5_gold_orb:

Start by changing your controls, you are very limited with combos with the defaults. Buttons you hold should be on the bumpers and triggers. Lock-on, SDT, Nero's Charge Shot, Vergil's Summon Swords. Next go into the void and practice combos, or download the SSSiyan trainer and decrease player damage to 0.5 - 0.2 this will make enemies on whatever difficulty take less damage allowing for longer combos.

It's learning. Think of it like a fighting game if it helps, or any other skill - you work at it. Try different things and approaches: Swordmaster is the all-around style, so work around using both your style and attack buttons. Get used to movement with Trickster, and maybe pepper in Gunslinger. Royalguard is fantastic, but take things one at a time. Get used to inputs, what does what, and maneuvering yourself around enemies instead of just focusing on damagedamagedamage. You don't gotta be donguri, and you shouldn't try to be right out of the gate - if you compare yourself to experts, you'll stunt your practice.
Dante is a Lego bucket where Nero and Co. are a set - you can get a little variety with them but you'll probably see a buncha Calibur and chargeshots where as Dante WILL be overwhelming. It's okay to feel like you suck at a character, and it's the willingness to learn that makes you good at the game.
One thing I did was exercising options (not necessarily in the Void either). If I'm air-comboing, maybe Ground Trick down instead of Mustang-ing or Helm Splitting. Even using Pole Play instead of Revolver to descend can get your noggin joggin' about possibilities to approach combat in this game. Understand your tools before you worry about juggling them.
