The emphasis on "brief and basic". For example, you won't understand why certain characters are the way they are without playing the previous games yourself or watching a playthrough. Let alone numerous references and stuff like that.
Luckily for you, DMC is not a story-heavy game and its main focus is gameplay, so it's safe to say you will enjoy it even if you're not familiar with the lore at all.
The story is dumb and fun, but it's not that important or even good. The characters are likable which is nice. Gameplay is King in this series.
3 games. Why would you ever advocate anyone plays DMC2?
Some of us enjoy playing as Lucia, believe it or not.
The game is still enjoyable without having played the previous games, but like I said, certain things will fly right over your head.
That doesn't mean you should recommend it to people. I did full achievements for it recently to recap on the game and see if it was as bad as I remembered. It was worse.
Trish is the only salvageable part of that game. She was actually relatively fun to use. Still doesn't make the game good, but at least her moveset saves the game from absolutely garbage melee combat Both Dante and Lucia have.
Also the fish boss fight with Lucia is the worst thing since moldy bread.
Just because you play as some shirtless dude with tattoos and gameplay being turn based JRPG doesn't mean its bad.
