For potential damage output, Vergil.
Defense would go to Nero w/ Gerbera or Dante.
Beginner friendly character would go to V.
Vergil is definitely a close second though, and in all honesty, for most players will probably be stronger since he has a more limited kit, therefore making him a bit easier to play. Lots of easy set up for massive damage as well compared to Dante, who takes a bit more intimate knowledge to get some of that heavier hitting stuff for combos.
Weakest overall is probably V, though, its likely just since I am the least familiar to using his kit appropriately. Nero is the easiest of the bunch to play, but also the most average in terms of what he's capable of, which, should be said, is still pretty deep and very powerful, its just a more specific but limited tool kit overall.
Without DLC, Dante is the clear winner.
But then Dante says "Royal Guard!" and the king is dethroned in one Royal Release.
Vergil can deal 4 times Royal release worth of damage in one go with 0 risk and no timming required...
On a more serious note, what about pure defense then? I mean, even normal blocks do not deplete your HP (unlike 3 and 4) and timings are much more forgiving. Sure, Vergil can dish out tons of damage in a matter of seconds, but Dante is basically untouchable when you know how to use RG properly. That, in my opinion, is a sigh of being stronger.
Even attacks like Judgement Cut End can be blocked/parried like it's nothing. Dante doesn't need pure strength to make his opponent look like an idiot, that's his whole shtick.
There is no contest. Vergil is the strongest playable character in DMC5 by a mile.
But yeah, Vergil is stupidly broken, makes DMC 4 Vergil look balanced.
Hell on Earth has invincibility frames through most of it's animation and does insane damage. Having a full SDT is enough to beat most bosses on most modes. Having SDT + DT to charge another SDT gives you 8 Hell on Earths and that kills everything off in the game. Not to mention that Hell on Earth Stuns most bosses when they get hit by it.
This one move turns the entire game into a joke on any difficulty.
If Vergil's Hell on Earth didn't break the game Dante would be stronger character no contest.
