What happened to Vergil after DMC 1?

So wait, what happened to Vergil when Dante defeated Mundus?
Since he's back in DMC5 (i played all the games, but i might've missed that detail)

In terms of what's shown in the games, I think that part wasn't explained. All we know is Vergil was simply on the verge of death (for real this time) and he sought the Yamato, and thus we have Devil May Cry 5's story after that.

Hopefully that's expanded upon in the future.

After the events of DMC1, as most guessed, his soul was free after Dante defeated him. In DMC 3, he fell into the underworld and went to fight the king. I forgot his name. To which he was defeated by him and became the black angle knight(nero angelo) in DMC1. In 5 he was dying so he needed the Yamato to to remove his weak self to become a true devil. DMC has some plot holes in it- like where did Vergil go after DMC1, why was he in DMC 4 SE. Who is Nero's mother, how did Vergil meet Nero's mother and why she feel in love with him(vergil). If you listen closely to the bird. He talked about Vergil when he was nero angelo in DMC1.

I'm guessing he came from where ever he got sent off to after he was defeated in DMC1. Then came to DMC 5 to get his sword back- Yamato

Not really plotholes. Vergil was stranded in hell after DMC1 because Mallet Island is either consumed by hell or blown up. His role in 4SE is not canon other than the beginning and ending cutscenes and they are set shortly before DMC3. There is a woman in the ending cutscene who looks at Vergil and many assume that to be Nero's mother.

I know people assume it's his mother but doesn't mean it's his mother. I want to know who she was, her face, her name, her background history. "PROOF" How they've met. The island blew up at the end of DMC1.

With all this talk about DMC, makes me want to go replay DMC3, DMC2*maybe*, DMC1, 4, DMC:DMC*maybe* and 5
