Everything is not unlocked, SandBox Mode
Hi,

Is there a way to really have everything unlocked while playing the SandBox Mode? I played today with Everything Unlocked fish-wise and starting rank 12 and it seems like some fish are still not available to play in this mode (example: Only one type of Lionfish was unlocked). Is it normal? Will it be fixed?

You have it backwards, my bro. "Creative mode" IS sandbox mode. When they coined the term, it was for modes in which everything was unlocked, often with unlimited funds. Kind of like sitting in a sandbox, with all the tools and sand at your fingertips to do with what you like. lol Your definition of "sandbox" would be like if you had a little bit of sand, made a castle, and then unlocked more sand for making the castle.

So yeh, this iteration of sandbox is actually more like "challenge" or "career" modes in other games, which differ from campaigns by refraining from making choices for you or from giving you mandatory objectives, but whilst still imposing obstacles such as finances.

It's up for interpretation. In my opinion, the misusage of a term isn't validated by the popularity of said misuse.

no, it IS a sandbox mode.
What you are looking for is a CREATIVE mode.

They are not at all the same thing.

Sandbox is a genre widely varied but has some fundamental requirements.
It doesn't matter if everything is handed to you all from the start or you need to unlock them through play. Sandbox is a game without a linear story or ending.

Sandbox game modes and creative game modes are different things. In sandbox mode you still have to pay for things, in creative mode placing stuff is free.

The term is relative though.

Sandbox mode, even by mog’s giant list, is generally defined as an experience with fewer limitations, though where some might still exist.

“Fewer Limitations”, but by what standard?

Well, with most games with a campaign, levels are organised by storyline, specific events or levels with limitations.

Megaquarium has a campaign with levels that are like that, so if you take those events, storyline and level limitations away, then you already end up with an experience that can be said to be sandbox, even though basic rules like prestige or money making still apply.


Many management games with a campaign are like that in fact. There’s a sandbox that frees you from the limitations of a campaign, but not the basic rules, and are still validly said to be sandbox.



It’s all about past experiences, your expectations and how sandbox mode compares in to the main experience.

I will say that megaquarium’s sandbox mode does exactly what veterans of management games take it to mean and it’s use of “sandbox” is identical to that of many other games.

If you’re new to management sims and are suprised by megaquarium’s sandbox, then I’d welcome you to update your definition and expectations of “sandbox” when it comes to this genre at least. You’ll see more of it here.
