Is there a way to set up multiplayer through a shared vpn?

me and a few buddies are trying to revisit this game from our childhood and want to try and set up a multiplayer through a vpn. has anyone tried doing this and if so do you have any tips or guides to set it up?

if you search up the swrc fix mod, you can get that, and it will fix the in game server browser. There will be a few lobbies with nobody in them, so yall could just hop on one of those. Here is a direct link to the mod https://github.com/SWRC-Modding/CT/releases
