STAR WARS™ Republic Commando

STAR WARS™ Republic Commando

Books continue the story?
So I heard that this was pretty much a prequel to a bunch of books on them. Someone said they were written by Karen Traviss but can anyone confirm that and maybe give more detail about what books they are?

Luckily, no Karen Traviss involved. Mostly it's Karpyshin.

Considering Revan wiped the floor with the Mandalorians, letting Traviss (who pretty much worships them) in on the stuff would have been a mistake. Look what she did with the newer Halo novels!

No, the Rebudlic commando books were written by Travis (At least the ones before disney Retconned the whole thing) And I would recommend reading them.

Yes! The video game was actually a prequel for a book series by Karen Travis. There are a total of four books (that I've read anyways) including Republic Commando: Hard Contact, RC: Triple Zero, RC: True Colors and finally RC: Order 66. There's also a spin-off series that got canceled after the 1st book called Imperial Commando: 501st.

The biggest problem I had with the series was that while the characters from the game were featured in the books as a part of the plot; they were mostly minor characters until later, where they started playing bigger roles. In fact, the game characters don't even appear until the second novel, I think.

They're good novels though. Very well written. If you get a chance, pick one up.

Alright thanks, yeah cause I remember playing this game as a kid and actually getting really attached to everyone. So Sev disappearing and not knowing whats happening to them got me pretty mad as a kid.XD

That's why RC is perhaps the best SW game out there: it takes its premise, and it makes the most of it it could back when it was made - which leads to most things being done lovingly and pretty well.

Yeah thats something I've really noticed over my years of playing games as times progressed the games didn't feel as special as they did back then which I think is due to multiple reasons but yeah this game and Brothers in Arms really made me feel for the guys you fought with.

Dare I insinuate that they were not multiplayer-focussed, unlike the AAA titles of today, and hence had to rely on top-notch single-player experience to suceed?

In that regard, I also recall the interestig proposal that modern games use storyline choices not to create a feeling of causality in the game's universe, but to create replay value.

Yes yes YES! The books were fantastic and really expanded the world of the game. It also gave us the clones' perspective on life which is really important to the story overall.

Both the games and the books are well worth their time and energy to play/read. Karen Traviss withstanding it's really nice to get a whole bunch of novels not about the shiny force-users, and get a much much grittier feel of the star wars universe. Especially during this time period when it was just all out war.

The one thing I'd like to add is the fact that this game DOES squad based better than any other game. I mean it's cut down and simplified as hell...but at least I'm not trying to blow shotgun rounds through my allies that keep queing up in a line to get fragged, unlike other games. It's soo cut down and simplified that it just plain works. And for once when you're downed...the game doesn't go "well your squad is too stupid to operate without you...game over." So nice.

The downside would be that none of the clones are better at their particular field, like it states they are. Kind of missed the bill on that one, but that would've taken a whole mess more of coding.

IIRC it's one of the first SW media to have that focus, dunno whether the various X-wing novels (the ones with the guy who has a Death Star tally mark on his fighter) came out before or after.

The x-wing ones came first. freaking awesome they were

RIP Extended Universe.

The fact that Disney decided to downgrade doesn't mean it's gone...
