Indeed, you can cause the Shape to lose track of you. It's a useful tactic to evade the Shape after it has spawned when you still have objectives to complete. Changes in elevation (when the Shape is not in Angel mode) and breaking lines of sight are crucial in accomplishing this. Once it loses track of you, though, the threat isn't over - the Shape will still wander around looking for it's "Most Wanted" player. This is where it's sight and hearing abilities come in to play in avoiding detection. Most times, you'll hear a sound ("dun duunn.....") when the Shape has spotted you when you're the targeted player.
