Unsecure is the entry. People have bags with who knows what in it.
Secure is when people passed security. They have had their bags scanned, suitcases and sometimes even their bodies in an x-ray machine.
Once you passed security, you are now in the secure area. Airlines can safely assume you do not carry items against aviation rules. Ranging from simple things like a nail clipper to the obvious things, like a bomb. But some countries, like Australia, even check for uncooked meat and seedpods. Since foreign meat and plants could potentially be a hazard for their native flora and fauna.
Thats why there are secure and unsecure area's in airports.
I tend to make any building changes outside existing building then demolish the "common" wall last thus maintaining functioning airport whilst making changes
