Economy (coach) class usually takes up about a third of an airplane. It is certainly most used, both within a country and on international flights. This is simply because the seats are smaller and therefor more seats are available in the same square footage.
Economy class is cheapest. It was meant to fill up an airplane. Most airlines make their money from Business class. This is meant for business people that need to travel somewhere within days or weeks. The price per seat is higher, the seat is also bigger than Economy (coach). But since airlines never know if all the Business class seats will be used, they created a Economy class. You need to book them in advance often. So they know months before departing how many passengers will at least be travelling. And thus how much money they will get at the minimum.
First class is even more luxurious than business class. It is meant for wealthy people. During the time of the concorde many airlines stopped offering first class because the wealthy people wanted the newer and faster concorde. So regular airlines offered business and economy only.
Since the concorde disaster and the fact that the price of concorde tickets was insanely high, it failed.
Airlines reintroduced first class by then. But the realy money maker has always been business class.
With the quality of Economy (coach) being very good these days, even companies send their employees to economy class. This is why economy is offering economy plus seats these days. Economy plus is basically the same as economy, but with extra leg room. The seats are just as narrow, but the rows are further apart so you can stretch your legs a little.
In the future, first class will probably disappear. Only business class and economy remain. Over the years, due to the quality of economy, it has become the most profitable. Especially since they can simply put more of those seats in an airplane.
Business class will become the new first class. Yet, on very long flights, there are still first class cabins that offer a semi closed room with a nice TV, a huge seat, snacks and drinks in a mini bar, really nice meals and often a shared shower even. But the costs are as one can expect.
For a flight from Amsterdam to New York (around 8 hours, while the concorde did it in about half of that) the Economy seat can be 600-800 euros. The business seats around 4000-4500 and the first class seats upwards of 20000 to as much as 35000 euros. It is the same plane, just different areas. And economy is no longer a bale of hay, so its usually fine :-)
An archaic term. Originally classes were first, second and third. Over time, second class became business class, then third class became coach. Only coach went on to be known by other terms we have today, with economy class being the most prevalent.
And about one of the other terms SimAirport uses? "Janitors" in English (at least in the USA and Canada) are now primarily known as custodians nowdays. (Although I was told to call them "custodians" as far back as the 1980's!)
