Circus show?
I've beaten the game a couple times, contained roberto, killed the necromancer, but I still can't figure out what to do at the circus.

Anyone know what its deal is?

Explore everything carefully. Barnaby Bob won't bother to start the show until he has a good reason... like to put a little fear into an overly-inquisitive adventurer.

Well, that's annoying. I did the 1 day challenge on my first run, so I assumed when the Clown said "Later" it meant I had to wait a certain amount of days.

Thanks for setting me straight.

yeah, I tried everything I could think of as well. Won the top and mid prizes of all the games, got the cotton candy achievement, got the coin for the kid then got him a balloon. Went through all the dialog in the house of mysteries, and still have no clue how to start the show.

I haven't fully figured out the exact triggers, but I have been able to make it happen on two runs now.

Things I'm pretty sure you need to do:

- Trigger dialogue about the mirrors not being just tricks of light.

- Trigger dialogue with the ballon guy by buying a balloon, talking to him on both sides of the circus, calling out his story of two clowns with the same paint by looking at the egg dialogue in the freak show.

- Ask all questions to the freaks and then ask all follow up questions to the clown in the freak show.

Things that I seem to need some of but I'm not sure:

- Get stuff from lost and found.

- Buy cotton candy.

If you do everything on that list (and have a ticket), I think the show will start.

I don't know if this whole list is strictly necessary but if you do them all the show should start https://www.reddit.com/r/westofloathingguide/comments/6tgzkx/west_of_loathing_guide_to_everything_the_circus/

The circus seems to be pretty tricky... my first playthrough, I got in pretty easily, but I had a harder time my second time around.

Something else you can do which seems to help is to kill the clowns at the campsite and clear out the tannery.

My first playthrough I lost to the clowns at the Campsite and it seemed like that expedited the entire process when I got to the actual Circus. Didn't have to do any of the exploring.

Of course, that means no knife and later access to the tannery.

Bob will send you to the tannery/give you its location if you make a deal with him.

That's what I mean by later access. You can get to the tannery as soon as you've found the Clown Campsite if you win, but if you lose you have to reach the circus (paying for the ticket, that means) and see that through, which obviously takes a little longer at best IF you come up with the meat immediately.

Sorry, I misread what you said as "no knife or access to the tannery"; missed the "later".

If you lose against the clowns, can you not try again?

Nah, they leave while cryptically warning you not to dig too deep. I think it adds a line after Barnaby's show, where you're warned again, and it also meant the show was open as soon as I won a ticket from the game.

Ah, good to know, thanks.

Is there incredibly bad stuff if you are not polite and kick his door in? As in something you can't fight bad? I don't take too kindly to having knives thrown at me and threatened. Especially since I wiped the floor with his little clown minions back at the camp and in the tannery.

Just that you can't make a deal with him, and thus turn in cow parts for rewards.

Plus, if you really want to get at him, I prefer the backstabby way anyway. Be nice, work for him, cash out your parts near the end, then assign the skeletons to, figuratively, blast the circus from the face of the map.
