Before I figured out what to do with the different liquids I thought I could put them to sleep, so I messed a bit around with the different options and now I can't get anymore blood. Did I mess up or how come I was able to drain blood from the tank and now, when I need it, I can't?

Yep, you're out of luck. After the third ingredient, whichever one you're at, the mixture will cause the tap to break in some way. Basically you can't unlock another character to fight with you.

I've heard it's random, but the two times I played & got there, it was the same: milk -> blood -> ichor

You get the recipe from hiding in the wardrobe. Wished I had known this earlier.

Thanks!...but

Didn't work and fused the taps in the process =P My character said it was unpleasant and dumped the contents of the beaker.

Is that companion obtainable only if you go the Necro route? or can you get it along another companion?

Has nothing to do with the necro route. You can get him with another companion without having read a single nex-mex book.
