Hard Mode difficulty?

I heard that the game is rather easy, and I prefer a harder difficulty setting so that I can feel more challenged. I know about the hard hat to make the game harder, but how much harder does it make the game? Does it become more moderate in difficulty or does the game become Dark Souls-like? As much as I like challenge I am not a masochist.

Note that I do not own the game yet, since this question affects my decision to buy the game. As much as I like jokes, that won't be enough for me to enjoy a game. I need challenging gameplay, but not masochist levels of it.

Sigh.. "Dark Souls-like" .... Anyway....

There is a hard mode in the game but its unlocked in boring town. To get it, you have to get Blacky the horse. Afterwards, there is a drunk in the bar that mumbles about an evil force on floor 40 of the mine. Go back to the mine and where the elavator is and get whats on level 40. You will be able to pick up a hat that activates hard mode.

Hard mode forces you to wear a hat that you can not take off. You can not use Blacky the horse and you can't have Gary as a partner. You also can not use grinding patches that are in various towns in the game. The enemies stats are much higher and I think the experence gain is much less.

It's pretty tough and I would HIGHLY recommend that you at least play around with a class you like before starting hard mode.
