Trouble with Curly

I don't know how spoiler-y this is, so I'll blank it out just in case. I just got to Halloway's Hideaway, with the first half of the map. Halloway doesn't trust me enough to give me the other half, but I don't have any options to make him trust me more. How do I proceed, or have I messed something up permanently?
Also kind of surprised that no one has made a full guide to Curly's quest yet, as of me writing this discussion.

If you can find something that belongs to him, returning it might help. Try his old bunk at Breadwood

I've tried giving him the item you find in Breadwood: the pin . He just freaks out when I try to show it to him. I have no clue what else to try. I've not found any other information about it, either.

how do you get the first half of the map though?

If you didn't actually read the map having it doesn't progress the quest.

You get the left half of the map in Curly's Hideout in Madness Maw Mine, but I think I've messed up the right half.
