Though, I wouldn't put it past the game to do some randomization across playthroughs, so I'll say how I figured it out.
First, notice that Granny Smith's buried on the other side of the screen, and was born in 1800.
Then, I just went though all of the graves systematically, eliminating names that ended in a consonant, didn't have more than 5 letters, and weren't born in the right range. That was the easy bit.
That left me with 5 names.
It wasn't clear to me which 4 graves were Granny Smith's daughters, but the ones born before 1830 I figured were pretty certain.
2 of my 5 names were next to them, leaving me with 3.
Then, I figured out how old all of the Beckys were when they died.
I got 16, 24, 38, and 50.
Comparing this with the ages of my candidates left me with two names.
I wasn't able to use the last clue, her love of knitting, until much later in my playthrough.
I don't recall where, but I eventually found a diary that confirmed the knitting granddaughter's name had fewer than 8 letters.
That left me with only one.
Hope that helps.
That's what I've read as well.
From the various threads I've seen on this, there's certainly some degree of randomization to the answer, though I'm not sure how much exactly.
I had Melissa as an answer as well, and I've seen some people with Magdalene as the answer. Don't know if there are other possible ones.
Never tried it myself, so I'm not 100% certain about this, but from what I understand reading what others have said on the subject, you -need- to find all the clues for it to work.
Like, just making random guesses (even if you guess right) won't work, and getting all the clues set a flag that makes it so it can be completed.
