You wouldn't think so, but you can. I always have Buffallo Bill with me, whether Alice is there or not. You can't become the necromancer though. I always choose Suzie or Pete, when I plan to go down that route.
Haven't played much with Pete or Gary, although they don't seem particularly strong from what little I've tried with them?
You're right about that. I've only played with Pete twice when doing the evil necromancer route, but his only semi-useful skill (imo) is weakening all the enemies before he gets killed. Gary is nothing but a hilarious handicap. He's funny to travel with, but he blocks access to Goblin Gulch with all of its meat as well as the tent with unlimited goblins in uh... that fort full of uselessness and despair with all of its XP.
Since you can play the game solo, you might as well just take them for the banter. Like I'm not sure if Crazy Pete just has some trick I'm just not aware of, but even if he doesn't add much in battle, he does tell you a bit more stuff about mines and the cult. I think he's mostly just there so people who don't bother to fully explore the tutorial area can still have a pardner.
All the companions seem to lag behind after a certain level, though, iirc. Gary's debuff from Fungal Spores and Doc Alice's insta-kill felt like they kept them relevant.
