Why is this game listed as "Remote Play Together"?

This is a single player game. It doesn't make sense that its remote play together, right?
Am I missing some mechanic that this introduces?

I think we're the first people to ask this on steam, searches on google have come up fruitless.

It could be for a similar reason as the game having a colour blind option in the menu, to make fun of people who want every game to be multiplayer and games which include multiplayer when they really shouldn't. Or it could just be a mistake that they never noticed and never fixed.

We enabled that feature so folks could play together during this pandemic thing. For example:

Get three friends together online, and each one of you is assigned one key W, A, S, or D. Now complete the game together!
