Although Gary the Goblin is a fun melee type - I sent him alongside my Beanslinger who became a Necromancer. This one of course used the Pale Horse (who, OF COURSE, was named Binky, as any good Pratchett fan should understand.)
Doc Alice joined my Snake Oiler on the one-day Hard Hat mode run. The ability to insta-kill skeletons proved fairly useful when fighting so many of them in that Cemetery with all the numbered plots. I had to use the Normal Horse for this one since the Dark Horse wasn't available.
And after that I had to try a run with Crazy Pete. Since he's a muscle type I paired him up with another Snake Oiler, but this time didn't do it with the Hard Hat, so the dark horse was available, so I've done runs with all the pardners and all the horses...
But my first run, the discovery run as a Cow Puncher with Susie and the Crazy Horse, is still probably my favourite.
EDIT: Do the horses actually matter? I chose the ghost one.
I think that every horse has its capability of doing something. For example: My dark horse can flee almost any upcomming fight.
Pale horse = "spooky", unlocks a couple of Nex-Mex books (it is impossible to learn *all seven* Nex-Mex spells without the Pale Horse, since there are only six locations to find a NM book otherwise: the two that you can get while wandering with the Pale Horse mean that you only need to complete five of the locations to have all 7 NM books, the sixth will have nothing there), and gives a greater chance of random undead encounters.
Dark horse = Makes it easier to run away from encounters while wandering or en-route (encounters at a specified location probably can't be run away from.) Cannot be chosen in a Hard Mode run since it is scared of the hard hat.
Normal horse = The default to which the other three are compared.
i have the dark horse and i can indeed run away from all the fights\inconters i get
Each pardner complement really well each class. Gary is by far the strongest, but he locks you out of many items and other loot. Alice helps with the Beanslinger's lack of healing. Pete has excellent synergy with Haymaker and Menacing Moo. Susie gives cover and stun, which are really useful if you're on Hard Mode.
