Similar games?
I really liked how most of the time you can avoid fighting by being clever and general focus on stories rather than combat or survival. I played something similar, but there I was constantly on the verge of death, and it kinda ruined it for me. What games would you say are similar to West of Loathing? Right now I'm planning on checking out Kingdom of Loathing.

The main one I can think of offhand is Planescape: Torment, which is real old-schooly but a remaster came out recently.

the old fallout games 1 & 2 would fit this bill, as would a lot of good CRPGs.

You can beat Undertale without killing anything.

I'd strongly suggest Age of Decadence, especially if what you're liking about WoL is the ability to avoid combat/find alternative ways to do what you want to do.

Classes & skills, interesting story, kind of a fantasy roman empire thing with magic and old gods and a bit of sci fi thrown in.

It's possible to finish the game with absolutely no combat.

And it just so happens to be 75% off this week!

To me, this game reminds me of South Park: Stick of Truth (2D rpg with cartoony art style featuring adventure game elements) with main differance being this game is actually funny :papyrus:.

KoL is pretty similar artistically and in terms of humor, but it's a pretty mixed bag. I'd definitely call it combat-heavier than what you've potentially seen in WoL.

Deus Ex (the original) can be somewhat similar at points insofar as that no enemy technically needs to be fought and that a variety of potential skills make fighting easier and/or more optional.

Note that while KoL is extremely similar in terms of writing (almost like it was made by the same guys or something!), it's not all that close gameplay-wise. For starters, there's much more focus on combat.

If you want a combat-light RPG, there's Undertale, the aforementioned Planescape: Torment, and Fallout 1 and 2 (and to a lesser extent New Vegas, which can be played pacifist though not quite as easily). I'm pretty sure West of Loathing's map (and chance of random encounters as you travel along it) was directly inspired by classic Fallout.

I should probably mention the first two Paper Mario games while I'm at it. While they're not light on combat at all, they're still the closest thing in terms of gameplay to WoL.

MY DUDE! Great to see Age of Decadence getting love. Certainly one of the best RPG's around for non-violent gameplay especially.

Must recommend Age of Decadence to anyone who like non-combat options in an RPG, and there's even a free demo on Steam so you can try it out yourself.

Yeah, sadly unknown/underrated game. Looking forward to seeing the new game they're working on.

Quest for glory (also on GOG if you prefer having no drm version) and heroine's quests

Quest for Glory is an old RPG puzzle solving hybrid game with a lot of punny humor like WOL and I think one of hte inspirations for WOL.

Heroine's Quest is a free game that was inspired by Quest for glory series. I would recomended just about anyone who liked WOL to try heroine's quest if they haven't played it yet. (also to see if they would like QFG)

Arcanum (also on gog if you prefer having no drm version) -

a lot likethe first two fallouts (which others in this topic recommended). Actualy come to think of it similar setting to this game but except being fantasy 19th century USA, it is 19th century Fantasy europeon stuff. Arcanum is a much bigger more complex serious game though, but similar with how it has mulltiple solutions.
