Is there any purpose to them at the name selection screen other than to provide a pre-made name?

clicking them changes your random name given to you .
of course, you can just click the names and type your own.

the owl adds birdy names to your surname, the bear adds bear -y type ones.

Clicking the bear generates a name fit for a cow puncher, clicking the owl generates a name fit for a bean magician and clicking the cat generates a name fit for a snake oiler. The bear is strong and beefy, the owl is smart and wise and the cat is quick and sneaky. Kingdom of loathing and West of loathing writers are subtle that way. Check the KOL wiki, find a random item and check the reference tab, the devs usually have atleast 3 subtle pop culture references in the description and name of the item. It's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ amazing.
