Perhaps, the veils can be more appealing for those who want to raise money by smuggling.
I have a feeling though that Hearts is the most worthwhile stat to invest into: there are plenty hearts-based checks for nightmares you don't want to fail, some rare opportunities require hearts (storm that speaks for example) + The wrath of heaven requires a lot of hearts. + advanced assaying device requires hearts.
From a challenges point of view, they're all as important as each other really, you don't want to completely neglect anything. Most important do or die style checks have more than one option so you can't screw yourself over in that regard.
The best you can hope for is 2 stats at 75 and the other 2 around 40-50 depending on officer bonuses. This means you can never have full tier 4 equipment in every slot, choices have to be made.
If the biggest boom is all you want then hearts are required, if you want to smuggle then veils are probably a good idea, if you want the safety net of a large hull then irons is a good shout, you get the idea.
The game intends for you to continue the lineage and do different stuff each time, focus on different things and set different goals. You can't see everything with one captain and reaching level 20 is fairly rapid, especially with future captains.
Personal opinion, not having decent Mirrors annoys me, i seem to notice it more than others and iron seems to be the stat i leave the lowest, i seem to have less call for it.
Tldr they're all as important as each other and you can't max them all on one captain. Aim to get 2 to 75 and the other 2 to 50ish. Doesn't matter what you pick, they all have uses and neglecting any completely will screw you over eventually.
Hearts IS definitely important though
If you're going to go around smuggling, definitely invest in veils, smuggling pays well and gives a lot of XP, so if you're looking to powerlevel, that's the way I go. Iron is good if you plan on making your train a flying fortress, some upgrades for smuggling like some extra containers also require iron if I'm not mistaken.
Whatever you choose, definitely invest in hearts as a close second, there's a lot of hearts skill checks, plus the tier 3 and 4 weapons are pretty good!
@SirKingJof When you die you can continue your previous captain's legacy and keep their bank as well as some of their ship upgrades, money, and inventory. If you're willing to play over more than one playthough, you can totally get maxed everything for your ship.
