High level weapons are total garbage?

I have 75 iron. I find all the shotgun type weapons to be entirely useless, as it fills my entire heat bar, and ends up taking longer for me to kill lower level enemies than the Grimalkin.
Am I doing this wrong? What is the best weapon for me to use?

Never liked the shotgun weapons but the high level cannons rockets and machine guns are all better than their lower level counterparts.

Shotgun is garbo since they added AOE's to some monsters and it's damage is sub par relative to it's heat cost since you have to land all hits to get the advertised damage. The problem is that the shotgun only works well against a handful of enemies while a lot more of them are way easier to handle by kiting with long range weapons. There aren't any utilities to support close range combat. Unfortunately you'll probably have to lean on a different stat or start over.

I'm currently running the blue shotgun with the green machine gun on my Moloch and I like the setup. Shotty is more useful than the mines were. Especially good for charging bee swarms. Maybe two machine guns would be better though.

My new favorite is the Tears of Astolat, but that required some serious grinding to turn up.

I had the same problem. I picked up a shotgun since Iron was my main. That was when I first entered Albion - after siding with the Tacketies. Needless to say, fighting every dreadnought in London with less than half of their range wasn't an idea I held onto very long.

I was fortunate to have Hearts as my secondary skill. I plan on eventually running with two Tears chainguns once I get the ship to support it. I was lucky enough to get my first one early on. Now I've just got to find another.
