For example, if you lock the fuel amount at 3, and it goes down to 2, the displayed number will still be 3 and your hold will SHOW 3, but the available cargo hull will go up like the game still thinks you used up one of the fuel barrels in the hold. That will make it impossible to interact with your hold (jettison) until you bring the hull space to the correct amount (by buying stuff).

Not all heroes wear capes.
If you know the IDs for what you want to change, in this case money, you can search your save file for the code
{"EffectiveLevel":9980,"Level":9980,"AssociatedQuality":{"Tag":"","Id":131137}}
(OP is technically incorrect, the ID tag comes after the value, the actual ID for money is 131137 not 133942).
Where the "level" is the amount of money you have. If you know the ID you can do this for any item or skills.
When you don't know the ID, or aren't having success searching the save file for it you can use cheat-engine. But the way I know of doing this requires you to have preferably at least 3 or 4 of an item and throwing it away one by one until you've narrowed down the entry for that item in the cheat-engine interface.
perfect thanks, now I can limp back to the blasted station.
Worked too just be sure to change both effective and actual level.
To those newbies to the sunless franchise I gotta warn ya: these kind of editing and cheats/hacks can really sap the fun from the game if you go overboard.
To the devs thank you for making your game easy to manipulate, makes it fun to change the vaules of enemies, prices and the like to mod on the fly with ease. So thank you for not making some convoluted mess that requires complex crap to install mods let alone mod the game.
Not gonna lie tho a built in mod manager that works smoothly would be nice tho once we start seeing more mods for this.
This is what I have for New Winchester:
