Fathers?! Did I miss something?
I went to look on my family tree (seconds after my death) to look for my prior self (who died like 17 minutes ago from starvation as a tot) and I see it says Father and not Mother. Did I miss some small update on the side or has that always been a thing?

During the server snafu last night my male character apparently spawned three children. Maybe it was that?

I just looked as well, and my most recent character apparently had a nameless father who died at five years old, twenty three hours ago.

So yeah, something's not quite right there.

Any time something happens to mess with a server like yesterdays event it causes the family tree to get all sorts of messed up. We've got dead babies listed as murderers for other babies, fathers of all shapes and sizes, or in one case a missing link situation where Eve had her Gen 2 kids listed as generation three where there just wasn't an existing gen 2.

It's always fun looking at the tree in these weird cases.

Cool that thier is the potential for fathers though. I mean you cant get it in game but he thought ahead of time to list any male that sires childern as father when checking through family lineage.

When bigserver1 got a read-only disk last weekend (a full week ago now), it started recycling playerID numbers, meaning that it was essentially submitting duplicate records to the family tree server.

I.e., when you died, it would submit something saying "Player 35 died and their mother was Player 17"

That usually works fine, since both Player 35 and Player 17 are unique in the history of a given server.

However, when the server glitched out and started re-using player ID numbers (because the player ID number is stored on disk), Player 17 might have already been logged with the family tree server.... and it might be a little dead baby boy.

So suddenly, your "mother" shows up in the family tree as a little dead baby boy!

And the family tree code is smart enough to call this your "father" instead.

Anyway, this has all been fixed, and the bad data in the family tree server has been (mostly) cleaned up.

No more baby fathers. But there still are some family tree gaps in some of the data from last week.

For example, you can see one such gap if you look at "this weeks long line" here:
