Bit unfair to call Fran a stripper. though. It's not like she has some special skill with poles or anything. Wait, come to think of it, she DOES have the best animation speed with poles out of all characters...
Also do keep in mind that Viera aren't just humans with bunny ears, they have slightly different bodies. That's why they're not wearing heels just for fun - their feet are shaped like that. Might well be that to them, wearing that kind of outfit isn't particularly uncomfortable.
I'm all for hot women in revealing clothing. But her outfit doesnt really mesh well with the world she's in.
Final Fantasy has this weird thing when the main characters clothing styles dont seem to match the world they live in.
I swear every Final Fantasy is me experiencing someones fetish(s).
It wouldn't. She's a viera in a human world. Most of the people you'll see are humans, while every viera you see (fran included) sticks out like a sore thumb because they're at least a head taller than everyone else, and always exotically-dressed. They're supposed to look out of place.
Ah okay, that does make more sense now. I'll still play the game. It is relatively high on my "to-do" list in my backlog.
Ashe's "Does this even count as a skirt?"-skirt though has always felt a bit out of character to me.
Objectification is misogyny, but I didn’t consider the physiology of the Viera. I remember reading about athletic thongs and how they can be useful in sweat management, with particularly absorbing materials, like bamboo which absorbs and dries out quickly. So there is some merit to that argument, well played. But, c’mon. My counter-argument is, c’mon!
Surprisingly misogynistic!
Objectification may be misogyny, but sex appeal isn't automatically objectification. Women like to look sexy too.
Also, it's worth mentioning that Dalmasca is basically a desert climate. Vaan is pretty lightly dressed as well, and that was a factor of the designs of the characters.
(from an interview with the character designer, Akihiko Yoshida)
Q: The characters wear skimpy outfits--whose idea was this?
Yoshida: That would be me. [Laughs] This country named Dalmasca is supposed to have a hot climate, so we were thinking of showing off more skin.
And what's more, you could argue that automatically labeling overt attractiveness as misogynist could in itself be construed as being misogynist, because it implies that women can't look sexy or seductive out of their own volition etc. And it's really much more complicated than that.
Of course there's a certain cultural attitude at play here that's a little complex in its negotiation of differing views between Japan and the West, and that's a many-layered issue that's not nearly as simple as labeling Japanese video-game aesthetics as inherently objectifying and/or misogynist - they have their share of issues to be sure, but there's also a different cultural baseline. And characters like the viera in FF in particular have a variegated reception and are, in fact, quite popular with female gamers, too. You could write entire books about this topic - people probably have.
At the end of the day, if YOU, PERSONALLY don't find this aesthetic appealing and want to change it for yourself, there is nothing wrong with that. Do what you like, play how you like, this is a single-player game that has no bearing on anyone but you. I know there's mods for various FF characters that change their outfits one way or another - some to be more revealing, some to be less revealing, whatever in between. Find the one that fits your personal preference, and enjoy. That's really kind of the beauty of mods - to each their own.
The misogyny take is also laughable, you're assuming that women don't like hot female characters.
but but but - 50shades was so misogynisitc that no women would ever touch it :P
