It's more like 7-10 than it is like 16, that's for sure. Combat is more real-time than in the earlier FFs, but it still has the classic ATB system. The story is more mature than some of the earlier FFs - more about politics and big questions, with an ensemble cast rather than a dedicated hero character.
The remaster itself is very well done. Arguably the best of all the FF remasters, with 60 fps out of the box, split language selection, etc.
As any FF it is rather easy, but if you just try to bruteforce it you will get bitchslaped.
The story is less focused on any particular character and their indivdual actual actions. The combat is more focused on you setting up the team to take the right actions them self - which really helps with the overall feel of the world as you can enjoy it a lot more (for boss-battles you will want to micro-manage it).
It does not have a world-map like the pre-PS2 games had, but it still feels rather big as it has more open areas with cross-connections and it is worth exploring them (as well as looking and sounding great).
Playing FFT first isn't requir'd at all. They may share the same world, but they stand separately on their own. I play'd Tactics prior to 12 & it made no difference to me, so I'd say just play whichever intrists you.
The events of FFXII are myth by the time of Tactics. The only thing which people remember is that airships once existed. I played FFXII first and Tactics after and it was fine. I think it might be better in that order as it makes the espers less of a disappointment. In Tactics they have a larger role in the story, whereas in FFXII they're almost an afterthought.
Well, I was gonna grab a screenshot to show, but they game refuses to launch today, lol.
Basically you set up what you want the character's to do, say a black mage you can set it weak to fire, cast fire, if weak to ice cast ice, and so on, that way they go down their list of gambits from the top until they find one that fits their target and uses it(don't forget to set one as if vulnerable cast fire(or something) so that they're not just standing around doing nothing).
Probably makes a lot more sense to see it in action with a screenshot or the like then have me try and explain things, you basically set up scripts for the AI to follow using hundreds of preset options, you can have any character performing exactly how you want them to.
Guess so, I don't know much about programming, but you do have a list of instructions and they follow it from top to bottom. You do have to unlock these instructions as you progress the game though, they aren't all there from the start.
Got it running, lol
