im not sure i like the new licence board over the old one. it feels restrictive. should i mod the old one back or is this new system worth giving a try?

U can even change them early on in the game pretty much whenever & outside of a few certain parts of the story u will not lose the ability to talk to him or go to Rabanastre. U also keep all exp & LP u gained. That is not reset.

The fear u r worried about is not a problem in this game. U will never be stuck or forced to reset in this game because of what jobs u chose. U can also run any combination. U can run 6 Knight/Bushi combos if thats ur desire. Doesn't matter. The only things that r irreplaceable r the rare or one of a kind weapons or items. In other words don't sell certain weapons or equipment like Excalibur or the Genji Gloves and u will be fine.
the mod in question only works on a fresh save meaning if i get hours into the game and decide i dont like it then i need to start over from the beginning to change the board.
If u get hours in and didn't hate it, then u suddenly do, let me know what changed.

My only advice is mix it up a little. Variety is the spice of life. The job system is not limiting in a way that u think. If u want a fun mod that adds a bit more freedom here is one I use. It removes the necessity of using Espers to unlock certain upgrades from certain license boards. Now Uhlan for example is quite good since it has access to ALL of its utility.

this new one is just fine, especially since you can get 2 boards on top of swapping them out at montblanc for free

And in some scenarios its stronger because of being able to 'board hop' where one license early on in one board is super deep in another board, and you can start getting late-board licenses

The reality is that even on the old board, you never actually got EVERYTHING on EVERY character. Why would you?

Restrictions don't have to be a bad thing. They can create meaningful choices, which spur creativity and engagement - figuring out which jobs to combine in what ways is a big part of the immense replay value of this version.

But if you really want to, mods for the old board are available. Only you can decide what YOU prefer.

ive never really liked being restricted especially if the change is a lateral one. but my bias means i usually mod it out or skip the game when i feel too restricted. i wanted to see if this change added anything that went against that since this is one of my favorite final fantasy titles. i dont need other peoples opinion to form my own. i already have it. but hearing other opinions and viewpoints can help inform my own and maybe even change it if im presented with new information i can gel with. in this case its getting opinions on this change to a core game mechanic that for at least some of us who played the original might not have wanted it to change. hopefully THAT makes sense to YOU

No, I'm afraid "I don't need other opinions, I just ask for them to maybe change my own" doesn't make a lot of sense to me because it's a bit of a contradiction. But that's okay. You've asked for opinions and you got some, with reasoning and justifications behind them. What you do with that is entirely your business, contradictory or not, doesn't really matter.

The mods exist. Use them or don't use them, as you please.

guy i wanted opinions on a significant change to a core game mechanic because i was on the fence on committing hours to something i might not like and need to restart all over to install a mod to revert it since those mods require a fresh game to work. you came in here ending your comment with condescension

I'm not sure how it's condescending for me to say people should make decisions based on their own preferences.

That seems the OPPOSITE of condescending to me.

But you do you. (THAT is condescension)

It genuinely baffles me that the old license board isn't an option native to the game. Because why would anyone want to play the game the way it was in 2006?

Probably because that would have been a complication not popular enough to warrant the effort.

This version didn't invent jobs. Those were already in the International Version on the PS2 from 2007 (which despite the name was only available in Japan), though this version did add the dual job option.

This remaster is based on the 2007 IZJS version, not the original 2006 PS2 version, which is why it has jobs rather than a unified board. Sure it would have been nice to have additional options to choose from, but at the end of the day that not only costs extra resources for very little payoff, but can also confuse a lot of players who can't tell the difference properly when faced with a choice like that. Just look at FFX and its Standard/Expert Sphere Grid choice - many inexperienced people think that is a much bigger deal than it is and get scared of "making the wrong choice".

yeah it was kinda jarring to be presented with this system and have no explanation for the change or any option to change it back especially since keeping it in as an option would've required minimal effort and just makes sense for a remaster

I find this to be a good question. However I removed the sarcastic irony from ur comment.

While I wouldn't hate the option, I would still choose the Zodiac board. Its better then many of u OG boarders(idfk what to call u) seem to think. The original board is boring and adds nothing but tedious ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to a system that should be automatic. I literally think the Crystarium from 13 is better. Just hold down the button until u r done. Ignore the jack of trades options.

tedium to you is casual grinding to me. some of us played this growing up and bought it for that reason. i bought it specifically because i expected the game i played growing up but now with mod options and got a game that was changed more than i expected. i cant speak for others but generally if im buying a game that's 18 years old i don't really want massive changes to the core meta without some kind of choice to revert said changes

Once again, changes were made a year after the game came out.
