For the other video modes, go to Adjust desktop size and position in NVIDIA Control Panel and select Aspect ratio.
To get to NVIDIA Control Panel right click on an empty spot on your desktop and select it.
By the way, keep in mind that when the game updates, you will need over 30GB free space so that Steam can apply patches to the giant data file.
I've also tried letting the system scaling override the game, since my system default is 200%, but that just makes the screen show the upper-left quarter of the game.
(Most games letterbox automatically without issues. I solved this in FFXV by selecting 3000x2000 default res and then setting graphics to 50%, which gave me 1500x1000 gaming with a sharp 3000x2000 menu overlay. I'm disappointed FFXII doesn't seem to have a similar option.)
Right now my best option seems to be 1920x1200, which runs only a little stretched and is tolerable. Not ideal, though.
Every other game just figures out to properly letterbox a 1080 setting. Not sure why FFXII doesn't do the same. It actually *does* letterbox some of the other resolutions, but at the wrong aspect ratio so even with black bars the image is distorted. Meh.
The game doesn't look terrible at 1920x1200, but it's just "off" enough to bug me.
Also - how about just playing in borderless window mode?
Oh yeah, with something like Flawless Widescreen to modifier the borderless window output? I would think somebody with such an odd resolution would use stuff like this more often.
