How do I get first aid to work?
Sorry, noob question. I just spent my first 20 license points on First Aid, and it is still grayed out (inactive). When I go out to fight mobs, it never shows up in the Technick menu (Steal is the only thing there).

Can first aid be used manually? Why can't I use it? So far I have two choices when fighting mobs outside the city: [1] run back to the city after every two or three fights and touch the crystal to heal, or [2] drink potions. Is that the way the game is supposed to be working? :steamsad:

"Select equip in the status menu, select the item you wish to equip and press confirm." I am not sure what the first half of that sentence means, so I am going in to look now. I will edit this post when I try to do that.
When you open the menu, there's a number of options on the left - one of them is "inventory" (where you can SEE what you have, but NOT equip it) another is "equip" (where you CAN equip things). So select "equip", then the character you want to equip something to, then the slot you want to equip something in, and you'll see what's available.

Okay, I'm not too sure what problem you're having. So I'll try to go through it step by step.

Press Y to open the Status Menu. Open the Equip Menu from here.
You can use Left or Right Bumper to swap characters quickly. You can equip a main hand (main weapon for the class you've chosen), off hand (shields for example) head armour, body armour and an accessory.

You can also remove one piece of equipment, remove all equipment, or automatically optimise an equipment set for each character.

When you select one of the five categories, you'll be presented with a menu with all items of that category. For example, if you highlight main hand and press confirm, ALL main weapons will be displayed.

Weapons in white can be equipped, weapons in grey cannot. Weapons in grey cannot be equipped because you lack the necessary license.

All you have to do to equip an item is select a white item with confirm. That's it. So you select the category, select the weapon and that's it. Once you select the item, it's equipped. It should go back to the category selection and it should show you the new item you've equipped.

If you need any more help, let me know.

I want to thank everyone for all of the helpful instructions. I am going to capture what was said here, also type what I have learned in the game itself, and create a new thread with instructions for people new to the Final Fantasy series. That way all of you helpful instructors should not have to repeat all of this assistance to other people new to Final Fantasy.

I have played many RPGs (dozens) prior to FF12, but FF12 has some unique and--to me--counter intuitive features. (Not being able to equip gear out of inventory, having to purchase both a license and the associated weapon/spell/armor/accessory, having to purchase both the Gambit slot and what you put in it, not having a quest log, etc.)

Part of my confusion was that people were using the term "status menu" when the game itself called it a "party menu." I managed to figure out we were all talking about the same thing.

I do have what I hope is one final question: The Libra Technick. I bought the license for it, bought it from a merchant, and went into the Battle menu and cast it on Vaan. The little circular blue icon appeared. However, I never saw any additional information from a foe. So, I purchased and equipped a bangle for Fran, and the little blue icon appeared for her. Again, no additional foe information ever appeared. Can someone tell me how to make Libra work? (Another one of those counter-intuitive design features for me.)

When one of your active party has Libra on (that blue icon), the monster information that appears in the upper left of the screen when you're targeting something should now contain their exact health, their elemental weakness (if they have one), and any status buff/debuffs they have on them. However, some enemies (bosses etc) are just immune to it.

Some areas also have traps on the ground; Libra makes those visible.

Just create a Gambit on one character for Libra: "Self --> Libra" and put it at lowest priority so they don't bother to cast it in battle or something. That'll have the character automatically cast Libra on themselves when they have spare time, thus you won't ever have to manually cast it again.

I have read about how to create a Gambit for it, I just can't get it to work.

I am booting up the game now to look for what Gus said. Edit: Ok, I see where the info is. Thank you Gus! Much appreciated!
