Press Y to open the Status Menu. Open the Equip Menu from here.
You can use Left or Right Bumper to swap characters quickly. You can equip a main hand (main weapon for the class you've chosen), off hand (shields for example) head armour, body armour and an accessory.
You can also remove one piece of equipment, remove all equipment, or automatically optimise an equipment set for each character.
When you select one of the five categories, you'll be presented with a menu with all items of that category. For example, if you highlight main hand and press confirm, ALL main weapons will be displayed.
Weapons in white can be equipped, weapons in grey cannot. Weapons in grey cannot be equipped because you lack the necessary license.
All you have to do to equip an item is select a white item with confirm. That's it. So you select the category, select the weapon and that's it. Once you select the item, it's equipped. It should go back to the category selection and it should show you the new item you've equipped.
If you need any more help, let me know.
I have played many RPGs (dozens) prior to FF12, but FF12 has some unique and--to me--counter intuitive features. (Not being able to equip gear out of inventory, having to purchase both a license and the associated weapon/spell/armor/accessory, having to purchase both the Gambit slot and what you put in it, not having a quest log, etc.)
Part of my confusion was that people were using the term "status menu" when the game itself called it a "party menu." I managed to figure out we were all talking about the same thing.
I do have what I hope is one final question: The Libra Technick. I bought the license for it, bought it from a merchant, and went into the Battle menu and cast it on Vaan. The little circular blue icon appeared. However, I never saw any additional information from a foe. So, I purchased and equipped a bangle for Fran, and the little blue icon appeared for her. Again, no additional foe information ever appeared. Can someone tell me how to make Libra work? (Another one of those counter-intuitive design features for me.)
Some areas also have traps on the ground; Libra makes those visible.
I am booting up the game now to look for what Gus said. Edit: Ok, I see where the info is. Thank you Gus! Much appreciated!
