Actually the concept is pretty cool.

Crossbows are easy to use simple weapons in general, that requier much less skill and training and strenght than a bow. Also so are guns, but MCH got that covered. Crossbow is really like the weapon of choice for a ranged BATTLE mage.

There is a melee BATTLE mage already.

Wizards should only carry big walking sticks and no armor into battle. That makes way more sense.

Well, when they introduced a class system into the game, they inevitably had to split all their different weapon types and skills into different classes, and having 5 or so classes just running around with sticks is not interesting. There's some strange designs like a time mage using a crossbow, that's probably why they dubbed it a battlemage instead, they use heavy armor for the simple reason that crossbow damage scales with STR, which heavy armor tends to give. I'm fine with it personally! It's interesting.

Back in the day black mages could use bows as well. Most mages could use knives, some could use swords, so I don't think it's a bad direction really.

Worth mention that Time Magic largely doesn't care about the casters MAG stat as well, so Time Mage loses very little from not having Mystic armor.

Measures are there, they are for MCH, and honestly measures are not much of a weapon as they are a source of MP free buffs.
