ignore who you were asking for help.
when you become lost in vs (or other jrpgs), its usually because you missed a small spot in the map with access to a new area, or you missed a key item or puzzle. i think also, in few areas in vs, there are "extra secret rooms" (meaning an additional secret within a secret room, or bonus area), but i dont remember if there was one or not near the beginning of the game (and usually those are optional).
from the % of map you have explored, it seems you are still near the beginning of the game, so backtracking shouldnt be an issue. also, since you have upgraded a bit your skills (and probably killed many ghosts), maybe you should avoid fighting them until you find out what you missed. you can later spend time with other enemies to harvest better items.
For the "most retro experience" try following a text file guide (lol), but it seems someone made recently an html based guide, which is easier to browse.
