I'm not terribly in love with the English VAs, and I also feel that the translation loses a lot particularly with Ashe. All the running jokes with Vaan being disrespectful are completely gone. She definitely sounds a LOT better in Japanese.

Come to think of it, most female voices in FF aren't all that great in English. Rikku from X/X-2 is one big exception, she's very well done in both voice and translation.

Now in all honestly the best voice in this game is Miguelo lol xD. He´s got a fitting voice for a lizard seller (gets shot by a horde of bangaas) Ba´ganmans´s is ok too I think.

I only played with English voices once, long ago, but I think they were okay.

The best voice in the original is, of course, Al-Cid. Not even close.

It's not often you see people complain about this game's translation or voice acting.

IMO Final Fantasy XII is one of the more controversial ones in that respect. Both the translation and the VA casting for the English version were, let's say, unconventional.

Fran, for example, has no accent whatsoever in the Japanese. In fact she speaks very elaborately and with great sophistication, employing highly formal and somewhat archaic phrases. It's definitely hard to convey that properly in a language that doesn't differentiate as much between levels of speech, but the decision to cast someone with a strong accent certainly raised some eyebrows - among the Japanese producers as well as the audience. Personally, I don't like her at all, and think it's a misrepresentation of her character. But there's many people who do like her English voice, too.

Same with Balthier, and in fact any Archadian. They gave them all British accents in the English version, but that creates a plot conundrum because at least two characters (Balthier and Lamont/Larsa) are revealed to be Imperials to everyone's surprise - but in the English, their accents of course give them away immediately, and no one seems to notice.

There's also the Occuria. Much like Fran they use sophisticated, somewhat archaic language - not at all uncommon in Japanese fiction as representative of the old and wise. In the English, they tried to mimic that with great effort by making them speak entirely in iambic pentameter, which to English speakers is very evocative of the ancient classics (though not as Shakespearean as blank verse would have been). I think of that as more of a success than Fran, though of course it also makes their dialogue sound a little strange at times and overly ornate.

The list goes on with many more small details. A personal pet peeve of mine, for example, is the banter between Ashe and Vaan (which I tend to mention every chance I get, I know). Vaan being the immature street urchin he is consistently addresses Ashe - his queen - in an overly familiar tone. To which she inevitably responds with the same key phrase reminding him to quit it. It's a running joke throughout the story, all the way to the end, and it's completely absent in the English version. Because the intricacies of how you address someone in Japanese don't really translate well into English, they simply translated the dialogue somewhat differently and the joke is lost. I feel it really helps establish Vaan's character and stress his immaturity, while at the same time reminding us that Ashe takes the whole queen business very seriously all the way to the end... but oh well, as a translator myself I certainly am aware that you can never have a 'perfect' translation and that some things are inevitably lost.

I do feel, however, that FFXII has more to talk about in that respect than, say, FFX/X-2 which have very solid and accurate translations, for the most part. I can't remember any big changes there offhand (though of course it does feature the incredible machina translation which I have literally used as a case study in academic papers on translation studies). But FFX/X-2 are much more contemporary in style, and not as "high fantasy" as FFXII can sometimes be, so I guess it was an easier job.

in the english version vaan is only a idiot with penelo. now its explained why ashe tell vaan to shut up suddenly without big reasons in the game. i tough she was being an idiot but now as it seems. "Don't interrupt me, Vaan"

i have to turn down the volume of my tv wherever this guy appear. from all characters when he speaks is almost like he is SHOUTING, his voice is so loud in comparison to everyone. thats another complaint about this game, the voices are so much louder than background music.

gotta say - for the most of it i like the voiceacting in this one. The sound quality is nto always the best, but i also mostly play with the minitor-inbuilt speakers so nmothing much lost.
the cast them self could be better too.
And i personalyl like the way Fran in speaking. Funny how in Germany there are some better ways to address the speechpatterns of japan, but no german audio sadly.

And Ashe... she is strange in all languages - just her character. Focused, but naive and stubborn.

Thats a goo thing. So oftne in games it can be rather hard to udnerstand what the characters are saying because the freaking background-music is louder. there is a reason why it is called BACKGROUND-music.

Migelo is voiced by John DiMaggio, who also did Wakka and Kimahri in FFX (as well as Gilgamesh in FFXII and FFXIII-2).

Here's some more:

Grand Maester Mika, Maechen, and Oakka XXIII from FFX/X-2 as well as Old Dalan and Gran Kiltias Anastasis in FFXII are all voiced by Dwight Schultz - best known to most people for his TV roles as "Mad" Murdock in the A-Team and Lt. Barclay in Star Trek TNG/VOY.
