Sorry, but one of the devs came out and said that 12 and 14 aren't the same world, just have some places with similar names and designs.
I agree! I would love a FF game to feature Balthier as the main character. You can drive his air ship wherever you please. Perhaps Balthier can truely be a sky pirate this time, rather than a puppet that follows a teenager around.
So another checkmark in the hollow fanservice catering in FFXIV, eh? 2.0 started off so well.
There are numerous references to Hydaelyn (the world of FF XIV) and Ivalice having a connection even before the Stormblood expansion which added Rabanastre as raid.
I went and looked Fortress up. The story synopsis for it on the relevent FFWiki page was so stupid I'm really glad they didn't actually go through with it. I don't blame the characters, I blame the writers who tried to push ahead with that dribble and call it a plot.
Basch on the other hand is tragic, protects her and loves her unconditionally . . . what a mix, so that part of the story made sense in Fortress.
The being tied down to one location sucks though and hopefully if they makes a sequel, we can roam Ivalice in freedom, like the world map in FF15.
Larsa isn't interested in romance either. He certainly likes Penelo and has respect for Ashe, but I never got anything else from him. Maybe because he's quite the politician despite his age, and knows how to put larger concerns ahead of personal feelings. I suppose that after his coronation a political marriage with Ashe could be considered, but if he's got a crush on anyone it's clearly Penelo. And even that is more innocent friendship than actual romance. He's a kid.
With Basch, it's loyalty more than love. He cares for Ashe not like a lover, but like a father - she's his responsibility, after failing to protect her father and husband both. He also doesn't have any qualms leaving her side after XII, as he's taken over his brother's identity in RW to protect Larsa. Ever the loyal dog.
Balthier of course plays the suave charmer, but it's pretty clear he's trapped tightly in the bunny's clutches. No escape for this one.
Vaan is similarly henpecked, and clearly will never have a say in how his relationship with Penelo goes. Not that he shows any sort of romantic affection for Ashe even in the slightest. In fact he's quite disrespectful towards her and treats her like just another buddy (this is mostly lost in translation, but quite clear in the Japanese dialogue). His concern is more for Dalmasca than for his queen.
The only one with ACTUAL advances is in fact Al-Cid, who's generally very open about his intentions and invitations. Though of course this could all be part of a persona, he's much smarter than he lets on (some nuances of which I feel are also lost a bit in the translation).
Anyway, I think it's great that FFXII has a story WITHOUT any sort of romance (if you discount the lovey-dovey marriage thing in flashbacks). Ashe is definitely a better character for it, and the story as a whole works much better with people focusing on politics and morality rather than personal emotions. I'm not sure a sequel that went 180 on this and suddenly became about a love triangle would have worked out - and that's so easy to recognize I don't think it ever would have gone past the planning stage. There's a reason the project was canned, after all.
