Asinine request. I have a job. I have two good hard drives ( 512 GB SSD and 1TB SSHD ). I find the 50 GB size ridiculous, especially for a remaster of a game that do not take more than 4 GB on the original PS2 DVD.
It's also not only a question of HD space. it's also a question of internet bandwidth spent for downloading this.
If you really just want to play the original game, you don't need to spend $50 -- a toaster could emulate the PS2 disk at this point. Most people are excited about this because of the giant bump in visual quality, and visual quality takes disk space.
"Bump in visual quality". "Of course things are going to explode in size". * Laugh out loud *. You obviously didn't watch youtube comparisons about the remaster.

The sharpen Photoshop tool for textures has been overused and they mainly focused on polishing the main characters.
FYI, They even kept the original draw distance calculations of the PS2 for the PS4 Remaster. I put my hand on fire that the only bullsh*** thing that is sizing so much are the voices and the cutscenes. And believe me, they were already very nice on PS2 when compressed.
THIS. But I guess it will mean more servers maintenance and would result of a price increase somehow.
Still, I'm ready to pay to have this damn option on Steam for games above 20GB. It starts to be a pain in the a**.
Hopefully FFXII will be the same (bandwidth is a lot harder to come by than disk space these days).

Note that the 4k assets are even worse at 155GB.
That difference, by the way, highlights that the Op is complaining about here. Upping the resolution of visual assets has a huge impact on the size of a game. FFXII isn't 50GB because of multiple voice tracks or higher-quality music, although those do make an impact. FFXII is 50GB because the graphic assets take up that much more space. It's six times the number of pixels for 1080 resolution, but even six times the asset space might only bring it up to the same quality at a higher resolution, when really we'd want better than that.
This complaining is also premature until we know the download size, although I don't know if I'm too hopeful in that regard.
(And, yes, resolution doesn't scale linearly with file size, but you get the idea.)
