Don't even worry about this.

Optimizing on a per-character basis is about the LAST thing you need to do. The actual differences between characters are minuscule - and unless you are absolutely certain that you've maximized all other areas first, you won't even get any appreciable benefit out of it anyway.

Even for people with all the meta knowledge there is, most character differences are so small you'd never even know they existed unless someone told you. And that's not even considering the fact that the game itself isn't NEARLY difficult enough for that level of optimization to actually matter.

It's a perfectionist thing, and an obsession with minutiae. I doubt the people going on about how you really need to pick character X for job Y are even playing at a level where this would actually make any kind of measurable difference.

If you want to optimize for optimization's sake - go ahead. But learn first about all the OTHER things you can do to improve your party. Character choice comes last. It's sort of like worrying about what color your doormat should be when you haven't even built the house yet. Worry about the big things first - job choices, where to find all the right gear, etc. And then, once you're confident about everything else and feel you absolutely must go deeper because that's what you enjoy, THEN you can worry about what characters to put which jobs on.

The difference is basically just a very few stat-points (like speed that you will not max out) and a bit in attack-animation.
Maybe 5-10% difference in DPS in post-game when you have optimised eveything?

If I unlock like +70 hp on 1 job and then switch to the other will that hp boost remain or only when that job is active

In general, the same license will always unlock on all boards when purchased. Battle/Magick/HP Lores are shared between jobs in that the licenses are actually "numbered". There's 16 of each, and they can only be unlocked once - if they're unlocked on one board, they also unlock on the other. It's easy to distinguish in the case of HP lores because they come with different values - so if e.g. you unlock +70 HP on one job, then the same +70 HP license will also be unlocked on the other job as you do it. The same is true for Magick Lore and Battle Lore licenses, except it's harder to see which is which there because they all look the same. You can never have more than 16 - and some jobs already come with the maximum. Monk, for example, has 16 Battle Lores AND 16 HP Lores already, meaning that it won't ever get any more through other jobs; same with Black Mage and Magick Lores.

On the positive side, this also means that you can use other jobs to bypass "locks" in the board. For example, if a job has some licenses in a position where you would need to use an Esper to create a "bridge" on the board to reach them, you can sometimes use the OTHER job to activate one of those isolated licenses - and because they then activate on the firrst job as well, it will effectively go around the need for a bridge and allow you to continue unlocking the connected licenses on the other board.

Well there is difference in Max HP and MP, status points aside, everyone can reach max cap with the certain equipments, another real issue is attack animations that do counts in longer fights (Espers and bosses).

You can follow this general rule, from highest status to lowest:

For attack:
Basch, Balthier, Fran/Van

For Magic:
Ashe, Penelo, Van

Van is the hybrid of the game, but he still have more attack and magic points than Fran, but don't take him for a bad character by any means.

This is pretty flexible went it comes to builds tbh, so i wouldnt worry that much. Just keep this in mind
Vaan: jack of all trades
Basch: physical
Baltier: combos
Ashe: Magic
Penelo: magic, can be a pretty good melee attacker
Fran: the meh jack of all trades

I was thinking
vaan - knight / bushi
balthier - machinist / shikari
fran - archer / red battlemage ( and give summon )
bash - foe breaker / uhlan
ashe - white mage / time battle mage
penelo - monk / black mage

thoughts?????
