Hunt: Showdown 1896

Hunt: Showdown 1896

Any chance for a filthy casual to git gud at this point?
I'm a noob and really love the aesthetics of this game that's drawing me in. Only prob, i'm getting absolutely owned as I play soul survivor to learn the ropes. I've never been great at FPS on PC but I'd like to at least stand a chance. How competitive is this game this many years in and how much investment needed to actually be viable against ppl that have been playing this since release?

There is no matchmaking in Soul Survivor, so you can get wrecked by higher skilled players easily.

Best thing to do is find a weapon you like in the shooting range and get familiar with it.

As crazy as it sounds play solo bounty hunt and skulk around in the grey area to learn since there is no free roam.

In bounty hunt there is a decent enough matchmaking. But even in the lower star matches (stars represent mmr brackets) you will most likely face off against on avg underperforming, but still experienced people. The most important thing you need to focus on is map knowledge. You need to know from what angles you can get possibly shot in a compound to position yourself accordingly.

First check out some quick beginner guides on YT to learn the fundamental stuff. Afterwards there are some dedicated guides just for compounds/boss lairs showcasing the best way to attack/defend each.

It's possible to learn the game even at this point, however it depends on how much time and effort you want to put into it and how fast you can learn stuff.

As mentioned above map knowledge is really important,as well as getting a feeling for a few guns that aren't too expensive, so you know how much you have to lead your shot etc. I'd recommend frontier, springfield and a double barrel shotgun for beginners. Then choose something with higher damage or different muzzle velocities to get used to different muzzle speeds to get a feeling for them.

Once you have a general idea on how a compound is designed and which routes you have in them and a general idea of what your guns can do and how they feel it's pretty much straight forward in this game: position yourself wisely or learn how to push effectively with tools and consumables (nades and fake nades for example).

Then it's pretty much gg.
Forget Soul Survivor. Just go to the Hunt discord and find a group of 3 stars to play with.

Yes, you can get good still no problem. If you are good at shooters you will be good at this one.

I was focusing on soul survivor because I don’t like socializing on mic with randos..unless there’s a ping system I’m not aware of?

Then no you will never be very good. The people who are good know how to play as a team. If you never learn to play as a team then you will always just be waiting to get lucky and win one once in a while as a solo.

If you dislike playing with randoms try finding a premade group. There's several people looking for players to join them, even if they're new or in the lower end MMR brackets. That way you maybe even get someone to teach you the basics a bit faster then figuring them out by yourself.

If you mean you dislike socializing on the mic in general then you also can play Bounty Hunt as a solo, though you'll always have a disadvantage in terms of man and gunpower. But at least you have a MMR system in Bounty Hunt, so you play against people with a somewhat similiar skill compared to you, which isn't the case in Soul Survivor.

But to be honest, getting good in Hunt is easiest and fastest in Bounty Hunt together with other people. So if your main problem really is talking to randoms only, then try finding a fixed group that you can play with regularly. Otherwise it gets a bit complicated and I'd advise you to watch a lot of streams or videos from solo players to learn about positioning, smart engaging, best traits to pick etc. But getting decent in this game by only playing solo is a lot harder, at least in the beginning, cheers.

So this game can be very mechanic heavy depending on your style of play, but needing to flick to multiple targets in a split second and continuously track a bunny hopping wall bouncing strafe monster is not required to be "good". Situational awareness and smart positioning are king in this game. Breaking LOS and repositioning rapidly after shooting is also very important if the map area you're in allows for it. Also always be aware that you make WAY more noise than you're used to in other games, as do other players too of course.

As for the shooting... This game has some interesting quirks to it's gun play beyond just the time period. Guns are almost instantly accurate when you ADS and there is typically a long firing window between shots. I'd suggest practicing quickly ADSing to shoot then immediately turning left or right to gain forward sprint speed to try and dodge. The easiest you are to hit is when you're ADSing at your target, the hardest is when you're sprinting sideways. Minimizing shooting time and maximizing dodge time can have a massive impact on general survivability once you get the hang of it.

I believe the easiest you are to hit is when you're crouching and not ADSing, but other than that your text is mostly accurate.
