Best thing to do is find a weapon you like in the shooting range and get familiar with it.
As crazy as it sounds play solo bounty hunt and skulk around in the grey area to learn since there is no free roam.
First check out some quick beginner guides on YT to learn the fundamental stuff. Afterwards there are some dedicated guides just for compounds/boss lairs showcasing the best way to attack/defend each.
As mentioned above map knowledge is really important,as well as getting a feeling for a few guns that aren't too expensive, so you know how much you have to lead your shot etc. I'd recommend frontier, springfield and a double barrel shotgun for beginners. Then choose something with higher damage or different muzzle velocities to get used to different muzzle speeds to get a feeling for them.
Once you have a general idea on how a compound is designed and which routes you have in them and a general idea of what your guns can do and how they feel it's pretty much straight forward in this game: position yourself wisely or learn how to push effectively with tools and consumables (nades and fake nades for example).
Then it's pretty much gg.
Yes, you can get good still no problem. If you are good at shooters you will be good at this one.
I was focusing on soul survivor because I don’t like socializing on mic with randos..unless there’s a ping system I’m not aware of?
Then no you will never be very good. The people who are good know how to play as a team. If you never learn to play as a team then you will always just be waiting to get lucky and win one once in a while as a solo.
If you dislike playing with randoms try finding a premade group. There's several people looking for players to join them, even if they're new or in the lower end MMR brackets. That way you maybe even get someone to teach you the basics a bit faster then figuring them out by yourself.
If you mean you dislike socializing on the mic in general then you also can play Bounty Hunt as a solo, though you'll always have a disadvantage in terms of man and gunpower. But at least you have a MMR system in Bounty Hunt, so you play against people with a somewhat similiar skill compared to you, which isn't the case in Soul Survivor.
But to be honest, getting good in Hunt is easiest and fastest in Bounty Hunt together with other people. So if your main problem really is talking to randoms only, then try finding a fixed group that you can play with regularly. Otherwise it gets a bit complicated and I'd advise you to watch a lot of streams or videos from solo players to learn about positioning, smart engaging, best traits to pick etc. But getting decent in this game by only playing solo is a lot harder, at least in the beginning, cheers.
As for the shooting... This game has some interesting quirks to it's gun play beyond just the time period. Guns are almost instantly accurate when you ADS and there is typically a long firing window between shots. I'd suggest practicing quickly ADSing to shoot then immediately turning left or right to gain forward sprint speed to try and dodge. The easiest you are to hit is when you're ADSing at your target, the hardest is when you're sprinting sideways. Minimizing shooting time and maximizing dodge time can have a massive impact on general survivability once you get the hang of it.
I believe the easiest you are to hit is when you're crouching and not ADSing, but other than that your text is mostly accurate.
