Hunters,

The launch of Road to Hell is off to a great start! Our concurrent player numbers have climbed into the top three in Hunt's history, and it's been fantastic to see so many of you jumping into the action and exploring the new update.

With that, we wanted to take a moment to address some of the feedback we have seen online.


We have seen plenty of lively discussions around balancing and the new metas forming in 2.8. We love it. It's exactly this kind of passion that makes the community what it is, and we want to reassure you that all of it is being read and digested by the team. Your opinions are being carefully considered, and we will be keeping a close eye on the conversation going forward as these new meta starts to settle. Keep it coming!


A few of you have raised concerns that the new Points of Interest (Stronghold, Medical Supply, and Military Supply) can on rare occasions spawn too close together. Their placement is intentional and strategic, designed to drive higher engagement, but we understand the feedback. Some of the rules that drive our placement logic will also shift when the second possible Stronghold locations arrive in Chapter 2. We will be monitoring spawn locations and their impact on gameplay closely as well over the next few days before making any decisions on potential changes.


We couldn't help but notice some frustration around the removal of Dumdum and other Custom Ammo, along with the changes that come with it. We recognize this will cause a meta shift and have taken this step in response to player feedback on how these ammo types were driving a stale meta. We are genuinely excited to see what fresh loadouts the community will build in response, and we are weighing all of your opinions and match data for future development. This change creates a clean slate and a return to core Hunt gameplay, from which we can further build and tune while staying true to the spirit of the more tactical gunplay that makes us different from all the other shooters. Reminder that we’ve increased the Loadout limit from 15 to 30 with this update, so you have more room for experimentation.


Lastly, some of you have mentioned that Supply Crates aren't quite what you expected. Without giving too much away, we have an exciting twist on how Supply Crates will be used in the game arriving with Chapter 2 in July—a small teaser of which is hidden on our roadmap graphic. Stay tuned!

Update 2.8 - The Road to Hell Starts Now

When two military scouts go missing while investigating the Corruption in Louisiana and Colorado, their concerned Commander decides to go after them. But his request for an official mission is declined, and instead he goes rogue and forms The 26th Regiment. With the financial backing of Desolation’s Delegate, the 26th are indignant at the lack of official support, but certain they can find their comrades and clean up the alleged Corruption themselves. They are professionals: well-trained and well-armed.

Their first mistake is their arrogance. Their second is their optimism. The Corruption is like nothing they have encountered before. Beset by monsters on one side and enemy Hunters who don’t want outside involvement on the other, their arrogance is transformed into doubt and then twisted into madness as they all lose themselves to the Hunt.


The Stronghold is where The 26th Regiment had their last stand. Few survived the experience, and many who didn’t now wander the area, Corrupted and transformed into mindless Grunts. Here you won’t just find Destiny's Dial, Sealed Rewards, and Tarot Cards—but some new and interesting secrets…

The Strongholds are large and have 3 main areas to them: the trenches, the camp, and the fortified building. The camp area has a big mess tent where you will find:

In the fortified building of the Stronghold, you will find:

In addition, the military has dug in all across the maps with additional trenches and smaller checkpoints and campsites that can be discovered.


The 26th Regiment tried to know their enemy. Originally, they captured this Boss Target with the intent of sawing it to size and sending it out for future study. But during the siege, the soldiers grew hungry, and Sgt. Riggins had a different idea.

These are banish-ready Boss Targets that can be found at the Stronghold. Upon banish, they drop 1 Bounty Token. Before banishing this Boss Target, Whisper will be active, allowing you to detect nearby players. For the duration of Road to Hell, a Caged Boss Target will be guaranteed in every Mission, so there will be only 1 normal Boss Target in these Missions, with a chance of a Wild Target to be active as well. This means there can now be a maximum of 3 Bounty Token sources in a Mission.

With Update 2.8, we want to bring back the scouting mechanics we introduced in 2.7, but with some changes to address the community's feedback.

• Scout Towers have been removed for Update 2.8. Instead, at the start of the Mission, the Stronghold, Medical Supply, and Military Supply will all be visible at the start of the Mission. Other Supply Points and Extraction Points will be hidden.
  
• These 3 locations all have Scouting Maps. Interacting with Scouting Maps reveals all the hidden locations.
  
• The Scouting Map no longer reveals the location of Wild Targets.
  
• Banishing Targets, picking up a Bounty Token, or using “The Chariot” Tarot Card will still reveal all Extraction Points.

The Maxim M1895 is a new in-world weapon which can only be found at the Stronghold, with each Event Compound containing only one due to limited numbers of the prototype weapons. Previously used as a mounted gun, this version has been ripped off the mount and had some makeshift adjustments, allowing it to be shot from the hip. To accommodate the makeshift portability, ammo bags have been affixed to the sides so that a limited amount of ammo can be carried with the gun.

• As an in-world weapon, it cannot be extracted or carried in a Hunter's inventory. Instead, it acts like current Shovels and Lanterns etc. do.
  
• Even if taken to an Extraction Point, it will be left behind.
  
• Due to its makeshift usage, it’s quite cumbersome and will slow Hunters down by 25% when equipped.
  
• Being fired from the hip means that there is a large spread. Aiming will reduce the spread slightly, but is still not accurate.
  
• Due to poor cooling following its prototype nature, it can overheat under extended fire, causing a malfunction which needs to be cleared manually. Best to keep the fire rate low to avoid stoppages!
  
• It has 50 Incendiary rounds by default, but cannot be resupplied.

With Update 2.8, we are launching an inventory rework that aims to open new possibilities, promote loadout diversity at all skill levels, and give more weapons unique, viable niches.

• Weapons are assigned a Size from 1 to 5, as opposed to the previous convention of small, medium, and large .
  
• The player's default Weapon Capacity is 5, which can be extended to 6 with the “Quartermaster” Trait.
  
• Tools and Consumables are no longer restricted by type. Players can freely equip any Tool or Consumable to any slot, in any combination.
  
• Consumables are restricted to 4 instances of the same type (Throwables, Deployables, Shots, and Tarot Cards)

• Tool Boxes no longer resupply Consumables, instead only resupplying used Tools.
  
• New filter options have been added to the arsenal menu to help sort for the different weapon sizes, Tools, Consumables as well as category filters for Throwables, Deployables, Shots, and Tarot Cards. These have (for now) replaced some of the previous more granular filters for specific damage types for the sake of a better overview.
  
• A lot of secondary balancing went in across the full arsenal to make weapons, Tools, and Consumables fit their new categories. Certain Traits, like Quartermaster, have also been increased in cost.
  
  • You can find the full list further below.

Dev note: With this rework, weapons that are equipped on already existing Hunters and would no longer fit due to the slot size changes will be unequipped and placed into your arsenal. This also counts for Contraband items—even if the Contraband limit will be exceeded by this, you will not lose your collected weapons.

Carbine version of the standard military rifle of the US Army until the introduction of the Krag. This lightweight version was mostly used by Cavalry and rear-echelon troops, while still packing the punch of a Long Ammo black powder cartridge. Cheap and readily available, the 1890 model upgrade offers improved sights and handling since it was first introduced in 1873.

• Dev note: The weapon does not look like much at first glance, but once its role within the wider Inventory Slot Rework is better understood, the advantage of a punchy and cheap single-shot long ammo rifle at Size 3 becomes a lot clearer. The 1890 Cavalry is a great companion weapon for some of the more diverse and affordable loadout choices we want to encourage with this system work. In addition, it is a very good thematic fit for the increased military presence in Road to Hell, where a lot of the service rifles the military brought along would naturally end up in the hands of Hunters.

With Update 2.8, we are introducing a brand-new and free Story Challenge to the game: Let the Gunshots Ring. Designed with a focus on player onboarding, players follow in the steps of John Victor, a well-seasoned Hunter who is ready to show them the ropes. As they are guided through the story’s Chapters and Challenges, players learn more about and deepen their knowledge of the game’s core gameplay and mechanics all the while earning valuable rewards for free.

Dev note: With Update 2.8 we are approaching scarcity differently, targeting high-value ammo types by category. As part of this effort, Dolch FMJ stood out as an exception that we wanted to resolve for consistency. We also want the new scarcity to mean more across the board, therefore we decided a reset of the current inventory for all players allows for a clean slate.

• Extra ammo pools for a number of weapons have been updated based on inventory slot rework changes:

Our newest DLC, It Takes a Rogue, is available for Wishlist on Steam now and will be available for all platforms next week! This new DLC is iconic, if we may say so ourselves…

The Ironclad is a Legendary Hunter who hails from the chaotic badlands of old Australia, laying low in the years since his alleged death. But when he discovered what was happening in Louisiana, he knew it was time to don his old armor once again…

We sat down with some of the designers to learn about the inspiration for this Hunter, the design process, and how the design took inspiration from the infamous Ned Kelly himself.

First up we spoke to the Character Designers:

From a purely visual perspective, the armor was too iconic to ignore. Ned Kelly’s helmet and armor are probably the strongest and most recognizable parts of his appeal, especially because they are directly connected to his final stand at Glenrowan in 1880, where the Kelly Gang wore homemade armor during the confrontation with police.

For us, it was a great opportunity to take that instantly recognizable silhouette, the so-called “bucket head” look and translate it into a Legendary Hunter. It gives the character a very strong visual identity, while also carrying a lot of story weight.

What we liked most was the clash of two worlds: the rough outlaw figure from 19th-century Australia, combined with this almost medieval, knight-like idea of armor, bravery, and last-stand mythology. The armor has a practical purpose in terms of protection, but visually it also says something about defiance, survival, and the way Ned Kelly has been remembered over time.

The armor wasn’t only cool, visually, but was one of the most iconic ways to represent the historical figure and get across the conflict between him being an outlaw whilst also being a Robin Hood-esque type figure.

One of my favorite elements is the green silk sash. At first glance, it feels like an unusual detail, and that is exactly why it works. It makes you ask: why is this here? The sash connects to a more human side of Ned Kelly’s story. According to the State Library of Victoria, Kelly was awarded a green silk sash as a child after saving another boy from drowning. That small detail adds a layer of contrast to the character. He is not presented only as an outlaw or a violent figure, but as someone surrounded by myth, contradiction, and personal history.

Another detail I really like is the rough writing on the back of the coat, which references the Jerilderie Letter, Kelly’s long written justification of his actions before his death. It gives the design a strong narrative element without overexplaining it. These are the kind of details we like when we design characters—they are subtle, grounded, and connected to the real story.

The biggest challenge was finding the right balance between authenticity and visual appeal. We wanted the character to feel truthful to Ned Kelly and his story, but also to work as a Legendary Hunter in our world.

Hunt has a wide range of character types, but there is always something connecting them. For us they need to feel grounded, dangerous, and believable, while still having a unique twist. With Ned Kelly, the challenge was to respect the historical reference without turning him into a simple costume or a one dimensioned “armored outlaw.”

We had to make sure the design carried the iconic elements, the armor, the silhouette, the roughness, the personal details, but also felt gritty, immersive, and naturally placed within the Hunt universe.

In the end, I think the final design finds a strong balance between authenticity, mythology, and visual appeal. It feels menacing and iconic, but there is also more depth to it. Like Ned Kelly himself.

After the character concept was outlined, the Narrative Team then worked on fleshing out the story for the DLC.

Lots of reading. It was really interesting to learn the details of Ned’s upbringing and see how directly it influenced the kind of man he grew up to be. There is a lot of tragedy and violence in his story, with some people seeing him as a Robin Hood-type hero and others swearing he was a hardened criminal and terrorist. No matter which way you see him, we think it’s safe to say that he was massively influential in Australian culture.

It was pretty fascinating to do a deep dive on the history of Australian bushrangers in general. Escaped convicts and other various outlaws mixed with the brutally unforgiving landscapes of Australia’s badlands planted all kinds of wild story idea seeds in our minds.

While we added several true-to-life elements to his story, we also embellished the truth here and there, in true Hunt form, like Character Art did. We kept some (allegedly) accurate details in the form of quotes (the name It Takes a Rogue comes directly from the Jerilderie Letter), but we also changed certain details about his background as well as added one bigger twist...that Ned actually faked his own death!

Today we are back with a much-anticipated update from the Fair Play Task Force. Earlier today, we released a video update, which you can watch below, but we thought some of you may prefer a text version, which you can find here.

Hunt lives and breathes through its community's experiences. Your battles in the bayou are what become the stories that bring these grim backwaters to life. Our number one priority is making sure you can trust that the quality of your Hunt experience is always in the front of our minds. In some areas we're getting this right, and in others we know we still have room to improve.

Today, we want to share some top-level information on what we're working on right now, as well as what's coming in the future to make Hunt better.

As always with Fair Play Task Force updates, we have to be a little cautious about what we share publicly. Timelines shift, which can lead to disappointment, and sharing too much detail risks tipping off the very people we're working to keep out. So while we can't answer everything at once, or attach firm release dates to every point, we want you to know your voices are being heard loud and clear by everyone at Crytek.


Let's start with cheaters. Since our last update, we've issued:

• 3,515 cheating bans
  
• 428 mouse & keyboard on console bans, via our recently added AnyBrain tool
  
• 269 bans for in-game reasons

It's important to understand that more bans doesn't automatically mean a better situation. Sometimes fewer bans mean we're staying on top of active exploits, and sometimes a high number means we've caught a large group using a commonly identifiable pattern. We rely on a combination of tools, data, and player reports to correctly identify and take action against cheaters, so please keep your reports coming.

We also have a couple of initiatives landing in Update 2.8 that directly target cheaters. We won't be sharing details here, since keeping them under wraps keeps them effective, but we'll talk more about their impact in a future FPTF update.

Ping limits have been another hot topic in parts of the community. We’ve tried stricter limits in the past, but there were strong signs they weren’t working the way we intended, for both good and bad reasons.

We want to bring ping limiting back in a way that solves more of those negative issues than our previous approach could. We’re actively building a more robust solution that draws on a variety of client and server-side data points to assess each player’s ping situation. This has proven more complex than we first expected, but the team is making great progress, and we can’t wait to roll it out when it’s ready.


We understand how frustrating it is to be caught up in a Mission with cheater. What is equally frustrating is not knowing whether we ever took action against the cheater you flagged. That silence breeds mistrust and doubt in what is actually a very effective and crucial part of the ongoing fight.

Later this year, we're introducing better tools that will notify you when a report you filed results in a confirmed ban. We've still got a few quirks to work through to make sure this scales across our growing player base, but we're confident it'll help close the communication loop on these frustrating experiences. We want you to trust that your actions are having a real impact, because they are.


It's been humbling to see so many of you calling this the "golden era of Hunt content" as we keep focusing on what makes Hunt the best PvP-focused extraction shooter out there. That positivity has brought a lot of old Hunters back to see what's been cooking.

The frustration for many returning players, though, has been getting caught up in their legacy matchmaking score and landing against more recently seasoned Hunters. To help, we're introducing a Matchmaking Rank Decay system that grants a temporary handicap score to players returning after time away. Your rank will be reassessed across these Missions to make sure you land in lobbies that fit your current skill level, not your legacy one.

Hunt's creative combat is core to what keeps you coming back, and our matchmaking is what tries to keep that combat fair. There are factors we can influence—like skill levels, team size, and platforms—and factors we can't fully control, like server population at certain Times of Day, new cheats, or players experimenting with wild new builds. Our calculations do their best to account for as many of these as possible, and most of the time they do a solid job.

As our player base grows, we'll keep evolving the formula that decides who lands in a Mission together. In an upcoming update, we'll be trialing a new matchmaking system that factors in a broader set of variables. We'll share more in the coming months on what those factors are and the impact they're having on Mission quality as it rolls out.

We're also working on a range of broader matchmaking improvements built on the strong foundations we've laid so far, and we look forward to sharing more soon.


There'll be more to share on each of these topics as they get closer to release, but for now, we hope this gives you a strong sense of the direction we're heading, and our ongoing commitment to fair play in Hunt: Showdown 1896.
