Hunt: Showdown 1896

Hunt: Showdown 1896

Interested but…
I really want to give Hunt a chance—I genuinely do. The idea of hunting down terrifying monsters in a tense, tactical environment is right up my alley. I love slower, more strategic gameplay that rewards patience and skill. But as a firefighter and a father of a two-year-old, my gaming time is precious. I don’t have the luxury of dedicating an entire weekend to learning the ins and outs of a game—I need something I can enjoy in the limited hours I have, usually at night.

That’s where my hesitation comes in. I’ve heard a lot of concerns about long matchmaking times, especially for skill-based lobbies. Is this something that mainly affects veteran players, or will new players like me also struggle to find matches quickly? And what about server stability? I constantly see people mentioning crashes—how much of an issue is that in reality?

I also know Hunt is PvP-focused, and I respect that. I enjoy competitive games, but sometimes, after a long shift, I’d rather take my time and immerse myself in PvE content. I know trials were a thing before they were scrapped, but have the devs ever discussed bringing back a PvE mode? I feel like having that option would make the game even more appealing to a wider audience.

Am I overthinking it a bit or are these concerns valid? Thanks ahead of time!

So I can't confirm your concerns.

Rounds start quickly. The game has never given me any problems.

BUT!

Just leave it alone.

Hunt is more frustrating than fun. The matchmaking doesn't work.

As a newbie, the first 300 hours will be a total waste of time.

agree
There will never be a PVE mode. The PVE is not a challenge at all and would not keep people playing.

One you hit "find match" it takes a maximum of 5 minutes before it puts you in a match. That is it. If you want to find random teammates then it can take longer. I highly recommend playing with friends or finding a team on the Hunt discord if you don't want to play solo. There is a reason most of those people are playing randoms and you will probably get a bunch of immature antisocial maladjusted teammates. The people on discord have been 100% better people and much nicer in my opinion. You might even make some friends you have for years on there.

The game does have a learning curve. Don't be frustrated from losing a lot. Even once you get good because of the matchmaking you are only supposed to win one in four matches in trio's.

You will be dead by cheater before getting pve XD
my dear brother firefighter,if you looking for chill "ease you mind" pve game, than hunt is not it. its 80-90% main thing pvp.
if you like shooting and clutch heart beating fast "where my bullet went hope i get that mothta ♥♥♥♥♥ in the head" moments than hunt is for you. that's the thing that make hunt for what it is,addictive unique shooter in my book.
long match making times? - usually the game round goes as for 15-25 min
its really rare where you meet "sweaty" enemy where they camp until the last sec vaild.
most of the game go for 20 min or so.
learning curve is easy,if you played shooter games before,it will just take time but won't be that hard.
long match making times - no
crashes - it's more depends on your hardware like 90%, if you got a good gaming pc you
most likely.and i say again most likely wont have any problems.
i say again if you looking for chill just pve game when you come home tired after a night shift, this game MIGHT not be for you.

p.s - respect to all firefighter's all around the world,my big brother is one. :empireskull:
may god keeps you safe.

hunt is a pvp game first and foremost. there is a pve aspect, but it isnt the main focus and takes a back seat to the actual pvp combat. there *used* to be a pve only mode but was scrapped due to very few players actually enjoying it because of how easy the ai is to deal with.

the learning curve of the game isnt that bad. every gun is a solid choice and all of them do work. the cheapest bow going up against the most expensive rifle is completely valid and if youre good, that bow will win (and vice versa). there is a certain need to know game mechanics and the maps, but that comes with time.

matchmaking times arent an issue at all. a full stack of three players maybe takes 30 seconds to find a lobby. if you do plan to play alone, you will be put up against other teams of two or three players. the game uses an MMR system which determines what your skill range is (it goes up from killing higher MMR players, down from dying to lower MMR players) and there are times where it puts me in unfair matches, but as of late it is pretty consistent.

be wary though about asking these concerns on the steam forum as a good 99% of the people here go out of their way to tell people to leave the game or dont get it despite still dumping thousands of hours into it. these forums are the toxic minority of the community so actual answers to your question (other than "hur dur dead game") will be hard to come by.

You're too late for about 2 years. No one cares about the bounty, no one plays for the objective. Most of the times you'll gonna find yourself sitting afk in the boss lair while the rest of the server is having fun at the other side of the map. Slower tactical gameplay ? Nah, at this point Hunt became more of some CoD, MLG 360 jump headshots all over the place, the meta is all around weapons that can 1 tap people, the only thing missing is sliding. Hunt has crysis of identity, Crytek seems to be struggling in between maintaining the audience that loved Hunt for what it used to be and bringing new players to the game. So far the focus is on bringing new players and it doesn't seem to be going well.

You should give hunt a try. No other game like it.
Not as complicated as Tarkov but really challenging pvp fights.

You'll learn how to deal with the PVE rather quickly, you got to learn how to kill them silently and how to play silently if solo (and even with teammates).
Key is to hear opponent but not being heard.

Matchmaking is working for me, when I loose (and Hunt is about going in a map with at least 3 other teams if playing in 3 players maps or at least 5 other teams in 2 players map so losing happens more often than winning) a lot I get easier matches, when I win a lot it gets more difficult.

I love playing solo or playing with some selected friends I found here playing Hunt.

I my opinion, you never played a good pvp game, a good extraction looter, if you havent played Hunt ;)

The AI terrifying? Maybe the first 50h until you realise that any AI in this game is a push over and only there to function as sound trap or to lure players into each other. When you expect something like Monster Hunter with PvP in a western setting well this game isn't for you. The PvP part is great until you face some of those "tactical" players who just camp and wait for you to do something.
Due to the Devs pushing the camping playstyle lately it becomes easier and easier to compensate skill with it.
Hunt is a unique game but I doubt it's what you think it is.
