What you cant pierce are thicker plaster walls, brick walls or metal sheets or such. With fmj compact you can however pierce almost everything given that you are within 25 meters of it.
Shotguns penetrate easily anyway. For compact it depends on distance and material you want to shoot trough. Also there are different ammo types, like FMJ that lets you penetrate easily even on higher distances with compact ammo.
Stone walls are the safest in regards to cover, but can even be penetrated by Sparks FMJ for example.
On the Gun selection screen hover over the ammunition type. There is usally a short discription what this ammo type can do. Like "can penetrate thin wooden walls" or sth.
FMJ ammo will go through pretty much everything though, including several thin walls (and lose damage slower at range, too).
For shotguns think the same as compact, thin walls, not thicker ones, but you also have to be very close to the wall you want to penetrate. Slugs are basically like FMJ for shotguns, although they penetrate less (not sure if they can pen metal at all, actually). They'll go through a lot more than buckshot, though.
Overall I'd suggest unless you're using FMJ, just assume you won't pen and you won't be disappointed ;-)
They will penetrate 1 wooden wall.
But FMJ is king and has more penetration power than long ammo, but less than a Nitro.
