Hunt: Showdown 1896

Hunt: Showdown 1896

Stillwater Bayou
Now the map is back in rotation I must say it's pretty bad, especially compared to the new one.
Sooooo flat, so much open, zero cover exposed area. The open fields around Healing Waters in every direction except towards Pitching, Open field between Darrow and Lockbay dock, water all over the place.
Small box compounds, especially Catfish.
I was expecting a real rework to these maps. I thought they would be brought up to the same quality as Mammon's Gulch.
I wish I could select and deselect maps to play on. I'd never play Stillwater again unless improved significantly.

It was good when the game came out when having a Sparks sniper was the most dangerous long range weapon in existence.
You're making it sound like sparks sniper was the only scoped rifle before 1896 update. It wasn't.

I love the old map.

It's good to have a map that is a little more simple.
After a hard day at work it's gold to play a calming game of stillwater bayou!

Would be cool if we could choose which map to play.

I SEE - YOU DON'T LIKE IT. YOU THINK "THEY NEED TO ADD BIG MOUNTAIN IN MIDDLE OF THE MAP WITH MINES" :ujel:

Yeah, thats the point.
But diversity is great
When you are getting tired of running on glutch the stillwater feels so refreshing
But you are tired of bushfights in stillwater you are getting the chillwalk through colorado

I am afraid but when the rest of maps are back the gluch will feel more strange comparade to the average hunt experiense

but no doubt that overal quality of the gluch is amazing compared to the stillwater especially.
but also I would like to mention one extremely personal opinion in which I found stillwater and previous maps better than the gluch in one major thing.

Gluch got rid of the bushfights. Yes, there are still fights in the woods... but Stillwater is a reminder of this great moments where people are hiding litteraly in bushes.
From one obvious point - it might be a good thing. But overal I found some medium range weapons kinda useless on gluch

you are usually fighting on significant distance of 50+ meters or its quickly escalates into close combat >15m
and thats why even if marathon could be alright but there is no reason to use berthier, vetterli, martini-henri because they are more like rifles so they are not good at the cqc but also their bullets are slow that will be significant enough compared to lebel, mosin or even sparks. Actually winfield centennial kinda do relatively the same but it works with levering and you can also choose the ammo type including the basic ammo with 600m/s speed.

and this is annoiyng from gameplay standpoint because the least thing you want is to trade on 80m+ using ironsights while the dude actually got a bigger scope.
and as result you should let enemy closer just to realise that they are using shotguns but there was no mid range to find it out in time and hold them.

on the Stillwater side the visibility of the enemy works in the different way. It feels easier to find the approximate location of enemies but its harder to spot their exact position.
So people got to be be cautious but should advance and ambush also. In other words, variety of fighting range could be harder to estimate.

And exactly in these condition I feel like all the weapons may be enjoyable and on their places
Dunno man...
There's "somethingsomething" Gorge on the new map. It's brilliant. The building is not big but layered and complex enough, there's hills, there's drops, there' buildings. You can fight anywhere between 100+ and 1m distance. You can push it, you can keep your distance if you want. Any and all guns are useful there. Fantastic location
Now look at Lockbay docks. West side open water, North side a field, road, fence and 2 tiny buildings, South side river with bridge, East side 1 tree and fence then Alice Farm. The only ok-ish thing there is the building and the lower level.
Stillwater is very immersive and pretty too but not a good map in the current state of the game.
Also... Compounds are way too close to each other. It's about 20-30 sec running from Alice farm to Darrow's and/or lockbay,..

Maybe there's something I'm missing with the new map, no one thinks it's too cluttered, complex and confusing? Anybody else think that the new compounds and particularly their buildings have lost all character through over complexity and have severely damaged a balanced attack/defend game design?

!00% agree with you. Map (mammoth gulch) looks beautiful but plays terribly.
every map feels like ♥♥♥♥ if the opponents you face play like hyper ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
but the new map is objectively way less restrictive, more rewarding and with way more varied gunfight locations, although you probably tend to flat out avoid areas where you can get shot from 4 different levels

This game panders to low skilled no thought run and gun now, so those players don't like Stillwater because they can't just run everywhere doing whatever they want at anytime while being behind cover; they actually have to use their brain during the match.

Gulch is a ♥♥♥♥♥ fest filled with either cheaters insta headshotting +150m away or teams running away as soon as they hear a gun fire because there's no shortage of clutter to instantly hide behind or rocks to scurry around and away to or entrances to large buildings to camp inside.

I agree with you that Gulch has severely damaged the game design.

Done. Now read mine again!
Not the biggest fan of the Gulch, but i'm always for more map variety. Once Lawson Delta and Desalle return, I think we'll be in a good spot for maps.
Isn't Stillwater the oldest of all the maps? And it shows. It just part of Hunt's history. The developers clearly learned their lesson, as each map released shows improved design philosophies.

Stillwater is what it is. It won't be so bad once the others are back in play and we end up on Stillwater far less often. Sometimes it's a fun map to play on, as long as you aren't trying to cross all the water between Lockbay and Blanchett. I die so often out there.

Also, I like a good mix of complex and simple compounds. I really like Mammon's Gulch, but I do think that some of the compounds are needlessly complex. Some compounds should be complex, and some quite simple.

Like Fort Carmick is pretty complex, but Iron Works right next door is very simple. This I think is fun map design with some variety. Meanwhile Lawson Station is in the middle. Not overly complicated, but also not super simple.

Mammon's Gulch is just... there's a million different ways into every building. I get it, they are trying to make shotgun camping or blocking all entrances but 1 with concertina not a thing anymore. But geez. Trying to learn these new compounds makes my head hurt.

Completely agree. Insta quit when loaded on this terrible map. Not fun to play, at all. Very unbalanced, not fun fights, too many rat plays, much more then on new one.

even though stillwater was in the old hunt, i do enjoy gulch more. my matchmaking has been about 70:30 stillwater compared to gulch. i didn't play during the first launch of 1896 but played old hunt before it. i wish i was there for only gulch. however, it isnt so bad as you think, i kinda like how the map is familiar to me compared to gulch but that feeling is soon fading as i play more and more gulch.

i hope they bring back only the better maps from old hunt like desalle. i know there was a swampy intense map, forgot what it was called but i hope they dont bring that disaster of a map.

im glad im not the only one who kind of dislikes stillwater. i was gonna make my own discussion about it until i saw this one haha

I'm pretty happy right now myself. Because the two maps we have right now are my two favorites.
With the update I felt like it was a whole new game, and now back to 2019 with Stillwater >_<
