First things first, how did you play the game in 2016 when the game entered close alpha in january 2018 and released in early access a month later? Just out of curiosity.
If you want to check your current MMR you have to finish a match and then after it head over to the team details. There you can see in the top right corner the MMR rating of everyone you engaged while also showing yours at the very top too.
Now there's several reasons on why you might encounter these crazy opponents - btw prestige numbers don't say anything about skill level at all, there're some prestige 100 players out there that can't aim at all, prestige numbers only tell you how much time someone invested in this game - it can be people smurfing, it can be derankers that lower their MMR on purpose to have easier matches. Maybe with a MMR rating of 2 (if that's still the case) it really is the bottom of the bottom. Like the average player (the majority) is between 3 and 4 stars, if you're slightly above average you're already in 5 stars.
And I don't mean that now in an offensive way, but being below the average player rating doesn't happen without a reason. You basically said already that you're not a great player, but then you probably get matched against people that have some experience in this game, smurf or deranked to complete your miserable experience. While deranking has been adressed already twice now it's still possible to do it though it just became a bit harder for people to achieve it. And there could be ways of fixing it, however people will always find ways in order to get an advantage over other players, so I wouldn't get my hopes up there too much.
Hitting someone 5 times without him going down means that you hit the arms with a compact ammo gun outside it's effective range (where bullet damage starts to drop the further you get away from your target). Either that or you managed to get shots in but the time gap was so big that he managed to heal himself already with a vitality shot or a medkit. Otherwise there's no real explanation on why you'd hit someone 5 times without him dying.
Now there are several ways on how to improve yourself and your gameplay. You could start to train your aim with programs like AimLab, try to go for some rounds in the soul survivor first in order to warm yourself up before going into bounty hunt etc. If you lose battles because you're too engaging you can try to play a different loadout, take a slower approach or maybe if you're worried to make noise in the very first compound you can entirely skip it to get more towards the center and place an ambush for any approaching team. There's a lot of ways on how you could improve or change the playstyle just by taking different loadouts too.
The shooting range is also a great place for lower skilled players to get familiar with any kind of loadouts they want to try and training some accuracy on the dolls there. When I teached a friend of mine who never played pc shooter games before I always told him "be slow with your shots, because the slower you are the preciser you get and being precise is fast". So don't rush your shots but make them count by trying to go for the headshot or at least an upper body tap so you get the most damage out of your gun.
Don't be too afraid to be in CQC with a rifle but also don't push blindly into any kind of compound. If you don't see AI around then tread a bit more carefully because there could be traps or an ambush and so on. Also a big help is to find people to play with on a somewhat regular basis. They don't need to be way and above your skill level because then you would only face higher ranks anyways. But having someone to give you back up and talk to while gaming can also be an improvement. You can find plenty of people looking to team up on the official discord server or here in the "looking for group" channel.
Hope that somehow helped you and good luck with your hunting experience, cheers.
Frankly, I'm not sure what year it was, I just remember it was around the mid to late 2010s and I guess the game was just more simple back then. So around 2018 then because I started playing as soon as physically possible because I was HYPED for another Crytek game that wasn't Crysis. Hunt was a very different game back then but I guess I missed some changes that aren't as obvious as others. I stopped playing in 2021 because I moved to an area where internet wasn't available until I got Starlink. I "kept up" by watching Psychoghost on my phone when I was on break at work and just got back into the swing of things.
The game still feels the same well enough but there are absolutely CRAZY good players filling up matches now and the ballistics system is very backwards in terms of bullet drop which I learned was a thing like a week ago, but that's a tism rant for another time.
I do go into the range and practice things like strafing and jump out shots, I just wish you could bring a friend in to actually SIMULATE a combat scenario (obviously you couldn't KILL them but they would react as if taking damage the same as in bounty hunt, just knock each other down and pick each other back up type of addition to the range would help a LOT)
as far as I know, cheating still isn't really very much of an issue but I haven't ruled it out. I just didn't wanna come out and start screaming "HaCKeRs in mAh GamE" because that's a thing that has always been difficult to prove in Hunt if you don't spectate for at least 5 minutes while recording.
Maybe I just got rusty and am denying it to myself but Hunt feels far more competitive than it has any right to be now. Sure you compete for a bounty token but when a random gunfight feels like an average CoD experience its just depressing.
Okay so you mistook the time you started playing, understandable.
Well yeah, bullet drop is newly added since this update, though it's not as severe as it's in other games. Usually when you ADS you have a distance displayed in the bottom right (above your ammunition) that shows at which distance you need to add a heads height in order to still be able to headshot someone.
Well usually you can go into the shooting range together with friends (unless they changed it, haven't tried it out myself), but pre-update you could click on the shooting range tab, then invite your friends and once all of them are in your lobby you can start the shooting range like you would do for bounty hunt. You can also select there if you want to stay in a team or if you don't want to (gets rid of the blue outline and you deal damage like it would be an enemy player). At least that's how it worked before the update. But I think this should still be possible, so you should give it a try and see if it works out like it should.
Well cheaters do exist in every game, though I think in the lower skill brackets they're not as "rampant" because they win mostly all of their fights so they rush through the MMR brackets pretty quickly. However derankers would still be a problem to find in your lobbies as they lower their MMR on purpose to play against easier opponents. There have been some adjustments regarding this topic but I'm not sure that this is a problem that could easily be solved in the near future or at all, but we'll see about that in future updates I guess.
I understand your frustration. As a business though it Crytek wants to appeal to as many people as possible while still being as unique as they can. That's probably while they changed a lot of fights to be a bit more fast paced in comparison to the older days. Also a lot of people now are aware on what is the meta, how to abuse the meta and how to be efficient and good at the game in comparison to early access days. Like imagine all the different angles or spots that people figured out which help you out in a fight like crazy. So since it's a game that's already a few years old it's pretty normal that it lost some of its usual charm, that's just how thinks work in life I guess.
Anyways I'm hoping that you'll be able to jump into the shooting range with friends and get a bit better at the game so you can enjoy it to the fullest man, cheers!
See you in the Mines, hopefully the swamp again too
So yeah it 100% uses Engagement optimized match making on top of everything. I've even got one friend who I mentioned nothing about this, and he reported the SAME observation. One day it's as if his skill is just gone, no loadout on this world will work - you check who you're getting matched against, it's some 150hour china players suddenly half the time while you're on EU.
Well as much as I'd love to see you in any kind of map it'll probably not happen since I'm playing in 6 star elo. But regardles of that, good luck with your matches.
Also I saw in your last post that you usually don't engage in a lot of PvP fights because of some criteria aren't met. I do get that as a solo player you're always at a disadvantage, but becoming better also requires you to take some fights head on instead of trying to go for the golden opportunity all the time. I mean it's completely up to you on how you want to play the game, but I believe it's not beneficial over time. Just as a heads up, cheers.
IMHO, SBMM in Hunt works ok enough to get some kind of "fence" around your individual skill. This is what I experience at least on servers with good player count (EU for me).
I am a ~2000 h player with MMR 3* / beginning 4* and I completely suck when it comes to 1 vs 1 firefights. I miss every shot and get killed 9/10. This will never improve as I am on my skill plateau. But I have enough game knowledge to get my kills from ambushing f.i.
So, SBMM works ok in HUNT and shields me well enough from those insane 5/6* players. If there were no SBMM at all, I would not play this game any more. I know how it was in the beginning w/o SBMM in place.
Game's broke.
