IMO when you consider most shots wont be a one hit / kill from a large (which usually only holds one in the chamber), medium makes more sense due to being able to follow up your hits
Small Caliber is the best right now due to spam (Levering, Fanning, Dualies, ect.) That and the fact the game forces you into CQC due to all points of interest being inside a compound (clues and bosses).
If you're only fighting in compounds ammo type won't matter that much. Generally, medium ammo is enough to be effective across most distances inside a compound. Some compact secondaries can make up for damage fall-off by being semi-auto. The most notable ammo type difference you should worry about is bullet travel time and fire rate. If you believe enemies are too far for you to deal sizable damage on body shot, just aim exclusively for headshots, or try to maneuver closer if it can be done safely.
If you're bringing a shotgun, a secondary that's large or medium ammo would be best for long distance combat. If you bring a long rifle, a secondary like the nagant officer, caldwell new army, or bornheim compliment them well if you're forced to fight CQC. Those are all relatively cheap semi-auto guns that will 2 tap on chest (or 3 if you hit an arm). Just be mindful if you do bring those to try and remain slightly outside of shotgun range, lest you want to risk only getting one shot off or trading.
They all have pros and cons. I don't think any are objectively better than the rest honestly, they're all viable but you need to try and play firefights to your loadout's strength.
Mind giving a reason why?
well thats some of the things that makes a weapon good isnt it? if the compact ammo is more stable and can fire faster inside a compound then that might be the right tool for the job? you dont need a perfect pen at 30 m if you can pen with 6 shots in less than 5 seconds
Exactly, which is forced by the game by all points of interest being inside compounds. Unless you want spend the entire game sitting in a bush with a sniper, doing nothing for 20-30 minutes.
Winfield with high velocity ammo is cracked for head shots. Winfield sniper with HV is good.
Medium ammo rifles are decent, the best one IMO being the winfield centennial
Shotguns at anything below 5* are a useless as most people with a brain just won't let you get close enough to use it. If you camp in a lair be prepared to waste 30 minutes of your life because the guys outside will do it happily.
Sort of. If you're using normal bullets.
When you start getting into the FMJ category, FMJ compact bullets gain the same, if not better penetration than long ammo, but lose speed. Long ammo maintains its damage over longer ranges.
In any case, here is a damage dropoff chart as of 1.10.
