Compact and Sawed off versions useless?
Hey, maybe im just reading the stats wrong, but whats the benefit of play for instance with a sawed off Caldwell or the Specter?
All stats seem to be worse on the sawed off version, or am i reading something wrong?

Medium weapon slot. With rifle/sniper build it is serious firepower on short distance. (with perk)

They can be used with Quartermaster trait or if you like to play with medium slot weapons (romero hatchet + mosin drum).

Yes they are worse, but you don't have to sacrifice a large weapon slot and can bring them alongside a fullsize rifle. The Romero hatchet in particular suffers really bad from this as it gets the worse stats for being sawed of, and it is the only weapon that gets extra nerfs (aside from handling) for having a blade attachment, making it more like a medium slot machete (has the same damage model as the machete NOT the combat axe) with an attached very bad shotgun (pretty much as bad as the LeMat shotgun shell)
Crytek buff Romero Hatchet pls.

What the others said, sawn-off is compact whichmeans you can use them with big weapons. The reduced range can somewhat suck, but for the caldwell it's not an issue and for the spectre...nah, spectra ain't so good in it's compact because of it's fire rate. Still, being able to oneshot someone from further than melee range is a tremendous advantage, and the caldwell can two-shot reliably out to about 11m.

Dmg stats in game are shown at 10m range. Effective range of sawed off shotguns is 7-8m, so the displayed damage is less. They will still one-tap hunters within their effective range.

Half of the arsenal and tools are also pile of useless metal. Very much so to the saw offs. You can do better with knife run or nagant officer.

Untrue. Shotguns are a good counter specifically to knives and give less warning.

Agreed, even tho i havent played much, the indoor fights at the banishings for instance were mostly won when i had a shotgun.
And now knowing that i could use a sawed off as a sidearm, man im hyped, time to level moar :D

I'd say I'm very glad you're wrong about the arsenal and tools being useless. Many are generally inferior, but all are at least somewhat viable in their own scenario. No disrespect to you of course, but I'm very glad there aren't weapons that are completely unusable unlike many other games.
I can also genuinely recommend the LeMat mk2 as a weapon. The shotgun version has a kill range of 7m, which is small, but fantastic if someone tries to rush you and are hard to hit, you can backpedal and get a better chance to nail them in the chest.

In my statistic, I have never seen anyone use medium slots at all, ( as well as half of the junks in the arsenal).

Welp, again I'm glad to disagree with no disrespect to you. I use and see medium slots frequently, and often to good effect.

Romero Hatchet is sweet. Got a hatchet for hatcheting and a one shot shotgun for 5 meter kills that causes bleed real frequently. Its got horrid spread because if it was any tighter there would be no reason to bring a knife ever again.

Also the sawn of rifles have their place. I had a levering build with an Obrez as my range (cause you never really fight outside of too long of ranges if you are a boss killer type) and they combo'd well.

The Hatchet is in a bad spot.
he reason to bring a knive over a hatchet is the fact that the knive uses a tool slot and not a secondary slot, that can be used for something way better or just for stacking ammo pools.

if you want a good melee use a sabre or a byonett => more damage than a hatchett or more reach or even both in case of the sabre, also less stamina consumption.

if you want the shotgun shell bring a knive, for melee (not quite as good as a hatchet in damage, but way better in versatility and stamina consumption, you need 3 strikes for an armored with a knive or a hatchett, 1 for a grunt, etc.) and bring a LeMat in your secondary slot, which gives the same shotgun shell as a hatchet but also 9 shots of compact ammo with a headshotrange of 79 meters

AND on top of this in neither case do you need quartermaster !!!

Edit:

I think one could forgive the shortcomings of the shotgun attachment, if the melee damage was on par with the actual combataxe not the machete ( it also would make sense as it has an attached axe not just a small blade), which would make the hatchet unrivaled in damage and thus in fast clearing of AI (for eg.: being able to one shot or at least two shot the armored, what is a trait all the bayonetts have !!! on top of having a reach advantage in pvp)

also excluding the Bomblance as it is a Primary and not a contestor for the secondary slot.
