would the modified grip of the spitfire actually work in real life? I have not been able to find anything about it.

The only thing it seems to help with is more comfortable grip letting you hold it better with your middle finger while cocking it with your thumb which is what it seems to mention in a description

Crytek does quite an unusual amount of research into the guns to make them realistic. I just watched Jonathan the guns expert on YT react a 2nd time to Hunts weapons. In the first he criticized the Sparks hammer while reloading and Crytek changed the animation because of it. One of the community managers said she also knows a guns expert.

So I don't think their Spitfire mechanic is far fetched. Same with alamo and conversion chain pistol, both those loading mechanism have existed in this form on a different firearm.
