What are the thoughts on shotgun bolt?
It's so underrated. Reliably one shots people at a good range as long as you got great aim and it's cheaper than slugs.

I mean isn't the simple bolt a one-shot? It has like 240 dmg or so

I believe they wanted to write "flechette".

Shotbolt on the crossbows is basically a "shotgun shot delivery system".

Instead of your gun being the origin point of the pellets (and dropping off damage with range real fast)... The shotbolt impact with enemy body or any surface is the "origin point" of the shotgun shot instead. So basically you are launching a shotgun with your crossbow, to a distance.

The downside is the fact that it's a projectile, which means it has a rather long travel time UP to that point of impact when it turns into a shotgun shot afterwards and a trajectory/fall, like any other bolt from the crossbow. Just even more extreme fall over a shorter distance compared to basic bolt due to heavier mass.

Still... It's very good. Launching shotgun one-shots at a much greater distances than a shotgun can... That's fun. Still, needs skill/getting used to due to that travel time and trajectory/fall.

One problem - shotgun shell will explode as firecracker and won't kill anyone. Shells need a barrell to work properly

Well like all things in the game it can be inconsistent like the bolt hitting a limb from something range wouldn't one shot. A shot bolt makes it more consistent as long as it hit someone it fires a shotgun pellet through the hunter effectively killing them.

Yep extremely fun and rewarding. Especially when someone has slugs and you robbed them at a further range.
