Does Melee with a certain gun give variant-unlock XP?

By chance, do any of you know if you melee with a certain base gun, it gives XP to unlock the variants?

If you kill someone with the gun it should gives you the XP, even if you used it to smash your ennemy skull.

It's been so long since I've bothered prestiging but yes I think it does... you should be able to melee mobs and gain xp on that weapon type. Another good tip is to finish enemies (or even the bosses) with the weapon type you are trying to upgrade, as the last shot will attribute the xp to that weapon. Also if both you and a friend both bring in the same weapon or consumable type you will gain xp from each other for that type... but you won't gain xp from your friend on weapon types you are not carrying.

^ this was the way it was when I prestiged early in 1.0 anyways, you might have to try these things just to confirm it is still the same now

Yes it does! It's one of the better ways to level up guns when you're going solo. Keeps you silent on the map.

I appreciate it, thanks you guys. I kept trying to figure out myself, but in the heat of Bounty Hunting, I ended up gaining XP from fired rounds.
