To me, it's the same: if you kill someone, they go down. Nevertheless, they can be revived (unless they have lost all of their health chunks for dying too many times or being burned).
To answer your question: there are some server issues when kills, XP, bounty are not processed correctly. Crytek is investigating them.

Then, possibly it was as you said since in the match i had (that the game dc'd me from just moments ago due to negligent sub hour in advance warnings) I was credited 3 kills and 1 of them i know was of someone who was later picked up, so I dare say you are right @Shakaron
