How do you melee in gunslinger mode?

Default is V (hold for charged attack) but you can change it in the key bindings menu.

I don't understand the benefits of NOT using gunslinger then. I've only tried it once and it made the game much easier overall

It is. If its better for you then go for it. I started playing when the game came out last year and I used to the standard mode. I have tried the gunslinger but sticking the gun in front of me whenever I stop is annoying, and you should know that your weapon is clipping thru basically anything in the world. There is no advantage one over the other tho. You can't run while aiming but to lower your gun you need to run which is straight up rubbish in my opinion.

hm, I didn't think about the barrel giving away your position, that's a legit point.

I too play since the early access launch and like the default scheme, but in terms of pure firefights gunslinger gives a significant benefit.

I did kill a few hunters by seeing their weapon barrel clip through their cover, so yeah it's probably better to stick to the standard mode. Thanks!

dont forget if you use LMB in Hunter mode it's still the same as when you are in Gunslinger mode and press V
