Your also not always doing 1, sometimes its more.
Iirc the higher the armour the higher the chance to negate the DMG but not always.

This just for melee not for ranged.
The thing is - Armor isn't that useful as you would think. Missile resistance and melee defense are more important stats
Si senior, but dwars shield (as WH1 race) give only 35%. All the funky WH2 races have 55%.
In armour tooltip is to read (how resistant is unit is to missle fire and melee attacks.

So, in a vaccuum, no external effects, just a a great weapon dwarf warrior vs a goblin archer unit. No lord buffs, no research, no scrap upgrades etc.
A goblin Archer does 1 AP damage per shot and 10 base damage.
Great weapon dwarf warrior has 85 armor.
Armor stops between half of it's value, up to it's max value in a percentage against base damage. Using the 85 armor of the Dwarf Warrior, we get a value of 42.5% and 85% damage stopped of 10 base missile damage.
Meaning the Dwarf armor negates 4 to 9 damage per arrow.
The goblins, per arrow, hit for 2 to 7 damage. Averaging on 5 ish damage.
5 damage is ALOT more then the 1 damage you think they do.
Now, if the goblins had the 400% AP scrap upgrade, the damage would get a flat +4 up to 6 to 11 damage per arrow hit on a dwarf warrior.
Edit: this is ofcourse PER goblin archer, the stack has 120 goblins, you can see how quickly the damage adds up.
Soon you got like 30hp damage done only
Genuine question as I thought it was.
1, no shields. Op said unshielded, greatweapons.
2, each arrow does way more damage then you assume and give credit for.
3, way more then half will find a target.
Ranged is not that good documented as Melee.
